Many religionists seem even more prejudiced against non-believers than against other religionists. It sometimes appears that they don't care what god(s) or religion a person "believes in" as long as everyone chooses one...

Well, it helps in the sense that belief in any deity helps buttress the mutual delusion that the idea of a deity isn't absurd. A non-believer openly challenges that core belief in a way a believer in a deity different from the majority does not. A debate about the correct name for the supreme being, or the 'correct' way to worship said being is less threatening to believers than having to debate the very idea that there is such a supreme being. Hence, atheism draws animosity from believers that is different both in kind and degree from intramural fighting between believers.
