So the depravity of man and the resultant need for separation of powers is not a biblical principle?
No, you are wrong. I have not seen Federer's book, but I quickly found other sources referencing Montesquieu's use of biblical passages. And the Puritans and Calvinists who were prevalent during the founding era used it. That Jeremiah 17:9, or the Bible in general, was not of influence in separation of powers is preposterous.
On the specific point of whether Montesquieu expressed his idea as based on Jeremiah 17:9, I cannot prove it. So I retract it.
On the right to privacy, it is not a question of god-given rights. What was handed down is that it is a Constitutional Right - a right protected by the Bill of Rights of the U.S. Constitution.
It is not.
We have to fight for rights in America, especially when trash like this...

...can be nominated by scum like Janet Reno and appointed by nihilists lkie Bill Clinton.

Righto, Billy boy, deny it long enough and eventually everybody will believe a BJ isn't a sex act. Wow, men all across America would be so disappointed if THAT were true.

It stinks that we "the people" don't get a say about who is judging us and deciding what is legal. Ginsberg supports making sex with kids legal. That'll be a Constitutional Right straight from the Art of Darkness.

All of them, huh?
You're implying that all slave owners were (or are) Christian.
Not only that, you're implying that you have a special insight into the minds of all people that have owned slaves.
You don't see the illogic in that, do you?
Are you implying that none of the slave owners were Christians?
Not only that, are you implying that none of the slave owners who were Christians used the bible as justification for owning another human being?
You don't see the rationalization for slave owners using the bible as justification for owning others do you?

.. yes, the mind can be free but with slavery, the body is imprisoned. Does the body have a mind or does the mind have a body ??..
.. humans continue to indulge in self imposed ego systems. Christians call it Christ living within via the Holy Ghost.. Atheists call it a rational, personal system based on integrity and compassion. Hindus say, "None but a god can worship a god." To worship any god, humans must find spiritual principles in their god (ego)..
.. this obsession with self (ego) and beliefs (more ego) has created exploding narcissism and is an odious danger to worldwide problems. One simply has to look at the battle between Jews, Christianity and Islam to clearly see the picture ..
.. yes, some portions of the bible contain moral imperatives. If you eliminate the interpretation of clerics seeking power, the bible actually encourages humans to find their own meaning to the parables, the mysteries of life, the shedding of ego ..
.. in the past, all civilizations have been grounded in myth that operate in the same mode: good -vs- evil based on the experiences of the people in a particular community, at a particular time and place, all bound to cultural restraints ..
.. we are entering an era where the willingness to die for beliefs (ego) must be addressed. I strongly believe this is the next step in evolution and it starts with you, me and everyone else on this thread ..
Don't you have beliefs you die trying to defend?

No.

You implied that they "ALL" were.

Care to back that up?

And when you realize that you can't do that, will you recant your bullshit statement?

I made no such implication.
You don't see the rationalization for slave owners using the bible as justification for owning others do you?
Yes, I do see that.

Just like the Biblically ignorant Topix Atheist! that says the Bible wants Christians to own slaves.

Their erroneous justification condemns them and their ignorance, not the Bible.

Wrong. If one "needs a brain", he is in need of a brain, meaning he has no brain, so he cannot have brain surgery.

You should have said:

"One requires a brain for brain surgery".

That way it is implied that a brain is necessary, not something the person is in need of.
