Congregations for atheists are springing up all over the planet. There's already a schism: celebrate life without a deity, or preach atheism.

Good luck to ‘em.

I never like to harsh anyone else’s mellow. As long as it is democratic, transparent and lacks ideology and dogma there’s no harm done. Reli

I hope that (like many humanist groups) they do some charity work. An end to religion can only be good for society, but we don’t want to lose community, culture or charity work.

She added:“The structure is the same as church, you will have talks, songs and a sense of community. The London assemblies have now started to sprout charity works and community book groups.” Unquote.

I prefer humanist groups and skeptics (in-the-pub) but I’ll not knock what simply lacks personal appeal. Folk can sound unduly negative sometimes.

Well, if they start occupying their own physical space, perhaps we can all use the space to store the albums where we don't collect stamps, the bald hair dye, etc.

Interesting idea to have a community for those who don't have church, but I'm skeptical about the long term prospects for cohesion when the only thing the members have in common is a lack of belief. Clubs and other organizations are usually built around a common interest. It would be interesting to see whether an organization built around the absence of a common belief can replicate that cohesive factor.

I agree with the first two posters. I don't personally find the idea particularly compelling, and would rather spend my time and energy on causes where I do share an interest with others. Perhaps if they meet in the afternoon or evening, so I can still feel that sleeping in on Sunday mornings is an advantage over theism.
