Smokers are buttheads. They don't have a right to smoke, they have an addiction.

I cannot understand how an atheist could be a smoker. To be one requires blind ignorance of the health risk and/or a willingness to buy into the advertising of tobacco companies. Starting to smoke while ignorant of the risks is no excuse for not kicking the habit later.

I cannot abide breathing of smoke-- any smoke-- I have a pretty strong asthma reaction if I do.

So it never was a choice for me to be a smoker-- not even the relatively mild pot.

However, I do have sympathy for those who are addicted to it-- the modern tobaccos are far more addictive than the original wild varieties as smoked by the Native Americans.

On the other hand, that they gave this noxious weed to the white man? And it kills him by the millions each year?

Is a sort of revenge, I suppose...

Studies show, however, that the poor and the deeply religious are far more likely to smoke than not...

You lied about that being a study. In fact, you lied completely.

Atheist - nonsmoker

Smoking is bad for your lungs and makes your breath smell really bad and your teeth yellow. My grandfather smoked but that was only because they didn't know it was bad for you back then, although he did eventually quite smoking.

So far, only 7% of the nonbelievers who responded to this poll are smokers. The numbers are probably quite different for the larger atheist population, but the rants we've endured about atheists and smoking certainly do not apply to the ones who write in this forum.

Although I cannot smoke myself, due to allergic reaction to the smoke (any smoke)?

I am quite sympathetic to people who choose to smoke, and are happy with that choice-- they ought to be able to smoke in peace if they like (so long as they are not bothering anyone else's choice to not smoke).

I am also sympathetic to those who smoke but would like to quit, but feel the addiction is too strong and cannot seem to manage quitting. It is a horrible thing, to be addicted to something you would like not to be a part of-- I sympathize with this, too, as I was once addicted to religion's subtle lies myself.

While it is true that medical science has demonstrated that for the vast majority of folk, smoking will lessen the length and quality of their health?

A select few individuals managed to dodge the odds, and smoked until they died at a ripe old age of 90's or even older.

Unfortunately, the science of medicine is unable to determine a way to tell the difference between these individuals who's immune systems seems so finely tuned, that they may indulge in smoking without risk. Apart from them actually living to be very old and smoking and not dying, of course.

Bottom line, I suppose, is smoking (with the present knowledge-base) increases your risk of dying from some chemical-induced ailment, at a much earlier age than you would have otherwise.

And there is only one way to find out-- a single, non-repeatable "experiment" that will literally take a lifetime to do.

In the final analysis, it is not very good odds to smoke and hope you are one of those who's immune systems is finely tuned-- these seem to run about 1 in 20 or less.

On the other hand? If you recognize the risk, and smoking gives you much more satisfaction in life than you'd have otherwise?

I, for one, would not begrudge you your smokes-- so long as you don't blow your smoke over into my space. Of course.

:D
