There is an alternative to AA --
Secular Organizations for Sobriety (SOS) provides a successful and increasingly popular non-religious alternative to "Twelve Step" recovery programs.

There is also Rational Recovery, which has an interesting take on AA. AA's emphasis on addiction actually teaches the role of 'addict' and perpetuates self-identification as an addict.

Be that as it may, your reasoning is no justification of the bait and switch that is modern aa, OR the astronomical cost it has placed on our medicaid system to send the court ordered to "treatment" which is nothing more than a locked door and forced indoctrination into aa. The only place it is "special" to be in aa is IN aa. It creates disfunctionalism with the delusion of religious significance.

I was saved unto Jesus Christ at the Fellowship of the Alcoholics Anonymous. I drove up in my teal green Honda and said, "Hello, I'm Betty Binderbottom and I have a teal green Honda and two chihuahuas." I looked like the hind end of destruction so they made me read chapter one of Romans and then chapter two of Romans plus the Book of the Philippines.
After reading Romans, they made me entertain the notion that I was a sinner. Entertaining a notion, like entertaining a baby cousin or a pack of hyenas, is a dangerous thing to refuse to do. If you refuse to entertain a baby cousin, the baby cousin may get bored and entertain itself by wandering off and falling down a well. If you refuse to entertain a pack of hyenas, they may become restless and entertain themselves by devouring you. But if you refuse to entertain a notion, you have to be much braver than someone who is merely facing some blood-thirsty animals, or some parents who are upset to find their little darling at the bottom of a well, because no one knows what an idea will do when it goes off to entertain itself. Glory!
