Why? What's it YOUR business anyway?

You wish to DENY the equal rights to your fellow citizens?

Hmmm... it appears that you DO.

Based on your choice of religion...!

Again, marriage has never historically been exclusively defined as a single man or woman.

So it's quite simple - allow gays freedom to marry or throw out the Constitution. What you "like" is quite frankly irrelevant.

I can understand that. The problems, though, arise because marriage conveys legal rights that civil unions do not and because it is government that legitimizes marriages and authorizes people to perform them, not the various religious bodies. Because of that, marriage is defined by law, not religious tenets. As a result, any discrimination must be consistent with civil rights legislation.

Marriage is so fundamental a civil right that it is not affected when the rights to vote and own and bear arms are lost even after release from prison because of felony convictions. It's hard to see how the interests of the state are threatened by unconventional marriages, so justifying their prohibitions because of religious objections or bigotry is problematic at best. Even if I hated gays, logic would compel me to support their rights to marry.

100% spot-on correct: there are way too many laws with the word "marriage" or the legal representative of that word, to try to get a parallel-but-equal word past them all.

The simplest solution is marriage equality under the law--as guaranteed by the Constitution-- which also prevents RELIGIOUS inequality, and GENDER inequality too-- from even BEING law.

The easiest way to do that? Strip out any and all language which sets specific definitions of gender in the >>legal<< marriage laws.

Too many to count-- way-way too many laws to do that effectively. Some would be missed, and cause ....

Ironically?

The Constitution DOES GUARANTEE marriage equality ALREADY.

ALL the hate-laws that prohibit same-sex marriage are UN-constitutional.

It's just that nobody has bothered-- before now-- to fight them.

You religious bigots have had center-stage for FAR TOO LONG.

You are losing this battle-- and all the rest that you fight.

Which is a good thing.

Oh, but you do....!

You already said you are against gay-marriage.

Or more accurately: marriage equality.

You seem to think you and your hate-cult OWN the word "marriage".

You don't.

You did not even INVENT it....!

Really doesn't matter that much to me.
Today the Minnesota house passed a bill to legalize gay marriage. Should pass the senate and the governor said he will sign the bill. So Minnesota will be the 12 state to legalize gay marriage.
[/QUOTE]Huh. That's actually rational.

"You missed a bit, though.

"Marriage" IS a civil union. You're not legally married unless you get a licence from the County Clerk. Doesn't matter what religious chicken-shaking rituals you've undergone - absent the licence, you're not married.

Now, do you have a difficulty with same-sex couples acquiring a marriage licence?

Only that's just what they're called...

Civil union can have the same benefits as marriage. Just correct the wrongs there. Changing the definition of marriage is not needed.
