Atheist Islamophobia... Again

Apr 9, 2013 Full story: Religion Dispatched 3,766

Sparked by a Richard Dawkins tweet , in which he drew a parallel between Islamists and Nazis, Nathan Lean recently suggested on Salon.com that the most famous representatives of the new atheism "flirt with" Islamophobia [echoing Chris Stedman's prescient warning to fellow atheists on RD this past August]. As the article explains, Dawkins, Hitchens ... (more)

Nope, I altered nothing. You a little paranoid?

Like I said earlier, I don't HAVE to prove God exists. I know He does, that's enough for me.

Okay, let's get this straight, you believe in something because someone told you that the thing you believe in has proof of it's own existence but you have never seen this proof and it cannot be verified. Gullible barely describes this level of ... gullible.

Okay, I'll bite:

Name ONE THING-- ONE THING that Faith has actually DISCOVERED about the Universe.

Condition: the think must be PROVABLY TRUE-- claiming "heaven" or "jesus" as as "discovery" simply does not work-- those things are both unproven, and myth.

So.

Can you name ONE thing that Christianity has DISCOVERED as result of it existing?

No?

Hmmmm.....

<quoted text>I know you did, but including muslims would turn "most" into "vast majority" without an argument from me. Since the "vast majority" of athiests on this forum tend to lump muslims and Christians together, why would I tend to make it easy for you to try and prove your point?
They should be lumped together: they suffer equally from the same mental disease known as "faith".

They also treat ALL persons NOT in their exclusive club the same: as less than human, subject to oppression.

I did not forget-- your pathetic and Orwellian attempt to re-define what is *RELIGIOUS* war into something else is duly noted.

If there was no *religion* involved, feeding into the tribalism and hate?

The wars likely would not have happened as they did-- at the very least, they wouldn't have stooped to genocide.

Without religion, there could have been integration and/or assimilation, instead of genocide.

Religion feeds on the *differences*, and thrives on hate.

More to the point, folks, religion, which should prevent people from inflicting cruelty and death on those whose cultures or ethnicities differ, consistently fails to do so. No one ever seems to stop and think, "Why on earth am I shooting at a fellow Catholic?" Or Muslim. Or whatever.

Atheists are often lambasted over the death and suffering in the Soviet Union, China, and North Vietnam, and, while I think we are correct in pointing out that atheism was not the cause of that suffering, it's also true that no set of secular values helped to prevent or obviate them either. That wouldn't be expected, though, because there are no universal values connected with nonbelief. Religions, on the other hand, do make such claims, and yet the pages of history are thoroughly stained with blood shed by believers at the hands of other believers.

It is enough cause for doubt about the transformative power that religions claim to possess.
I agree with you here: the alleged "tranformative power" that religion preaches, seems to *only* apply to it's members, and never to non-members...

... of course, looking at history?

We see all too often, that even in communities who's religion is essentially uniform? People manage to create even more fine distinctions between the various flavors--however slight-- and pump that up into conflict.

In the absence of more obvious targets-of-hate that religion seems to require.

Yep.

Sooner than later, all True Believers™, no matter how nice they start out, have to resort to lies, to keep up their evidence-free "arguments".

Kind of a "tell" that separates the religious from the non-religious..

Agreed. Besides that, we have five senses, not just one. Air is the medium that conveys light and sound as well as aroma. We can feel it as it passes over our skins and tousles our hair. We can hear it as it rustles leaves.

We also use it to move boats over the water and compress it to support our cars and power air tools. We capture its motion to create electricity.

If any deity were as evident as air, there would be no reason for doubt.
