Sparked by a Richard Dawkins tweet , in which he drew a parallel between Islamists and Nazis, Nathan Lean recently suggested on Salon.com that the most famous representatives of the new atheism "flirt with" Islamophobia [echoing Chris Stedman's prescient warning to fellow atheists on RD this past August]. As the article explains, Dawkins, Hitchens ... (more)

That was intended as a bit of humor. Can't we all get an occasional chuckle?

Indeed they do.

Yet?

They gang up on each other, slaughtering without limits.

All in the name of the *slight* difference in their religion....

.... that is what Religion does: it helps people to HATE their neighbors who are *slightly* different.

Riiiiiight... what sort of fantasy-delusional world do YOU live in?

Hmmmm?

Your knowledge of history is severely lacking, if you actually believe the lie you just wrote above.

sure pal, tell that to the eastern orthodox and the roman catholics that were fighting each other there. or just check out what those two sects of that cult really believe.

perhaps you should do more than hit Wiki for a two second search before you comment on topics...

muslims and christians worship the same god, so it must not be a different sect of that cult either, right? sheesh!

Prove it. While you're at it, kindly remember that other countries (outside the US) have wars also. Please to prove you aren't wrong by proving THEIR leaders were Christians as well....tick tock, tick tock...

Sad, really.
How's that Trickle-Down working for you? Has it actually created even ONE job?
No?
Interesting.
Oh please, bob, the only thing you've proven consistently is that your intolerance for Christianity and all it's many contributions has rendered you incapable of recognizing intelligence if it even HINTS of having Christian roots.

I know you did, but including muslims would turn "most" into "vast majority" without an argument from me. Since the "vast majority" of athiests on this forum tend to lump muslims and Christians together, why would I tend to make it easy for you to try and prove your point?

Correction: In the name of a slight difference in their ethnicity. Serbs called it ethnic and not religious cleansing, or have you forgotten?

More to the point, folks, religion, which should prevent people from inflicting cruelty and death on those whose cultures or ethnicities differ, consistently fails to do so. No one ever seems to stop and think, "Why on earth am I shooting at a fellow Catholic?" Or Muslim. Or whatever.

Atheists are often lambasted over the death and suffering in the Soviet Union, China, and North Vietnam, and, while I think we are correct in pointing out that atheism was not the cause of that suffering, it's also true that no set of secular values helped to prevent or obviate them either. That wouldn't be expected, though, because there are no universal values connected with nonbelief. Religions, on the other hand, do make such claims, and yet the pages of history are thoroughly stained with blood shed by believers at the hands of other believers.

It is enough cause for doubt about the transformative power that religions claim to possess.

So you dishonestly altered what I said just so you could build a strawman and declare victory. That makes you a liar, thus from here on out I will not consider anything you state as being honest. You are a liar, and this is the proof.
