Atheist Islamophobia... Again

There are 3766 comments on the Religion Dispatched story from Apr 9, 2013, titled Atheist Islamophobia... Again. In it, Religion Dispatched reports that:

Sparked by a Richard Dawkins tweet , in which he drew a parallel between Islamists and Nazis, Nathan Lean recently suggested on Salon.com that the most famous representatives of the new atheism "flirt with" Islamophobia [echoing Chris Stedman's prescient warning to fellow atheists on RD this past August]. As the article explains, Dawkins, Hitchens ... (more)

Question?
When you read the English translation of the Old Test. do you accept this word for word?
"Misogyny" is very politically correct.:-)

if it is not to be taken literally, it cannot be the word of god...

Agree on taken literally, although a few atheist posters post the English version as attack language :-) Funny

Word of God? Difficult to know as epistemology rears its' head.

Some give God the benefit of the Doubt :-)

so if it cannot be taken literally it is in no way the word of any god. it is the word of a cult.

Anyways, the only reason I tell Christians that is because they don't want to discuss religion but tell me Islam is wrong and Jesus is the only, if I don't want to go to hell. So I simply tell them why I don't believe in Christianity. They don't want to discuss, just sell Christianity. so by say no, we both save time.
One of the reasons why Christians try to convert us is because they think we will go to hell due to our unbelife, Islam has the same thing belive or burn. I don't see how you can not want to discuss religion considering what Ialam thinks is at stake.

no you do not understand
it is impossible to know if there is or isn't some god posibly somewhere.

the gods of the religious cults we know of are proven myths. and there is, as yet, not one shred of evidence of any god, gods or goddesses to even begin the discussion about belief or not.

hope that cleared it up for you.

And this is a weakness because? We have to be able to justify our beliefs by good evidence, otherwise we are simply lying to ourselves.

have been meaning to talk with most atheists, but time constraints at the moment prevent this.

The old adage
"scratch and atheists and out pops an agnostic"

Being a non-believer I don't care if I'm considered atheist or agnostic, much less anyone else. I would have thought the distinction (such as it is) would only be of interest to the superstitious.

superstitious as in "black cats" and ladders that we do not walk under?

Enjoy Hitchcock films from the 1930s..he was superstitious and we enjoy the result.

My atheist friends seem a bit toward agnostic, some of the time, but so do my Christian friends. Life is complicated

Agreed. F**k the labels.

1. Treat others better or at least as well as you would be treated yourself.

2. I do believe the scientific method is the best we have to get to the truth.

3. I don't believe in any deities.

This has been explained many times, but here goes again.

Atheism and agnosticism result from negative answers to two different questions:

1. Do you believe that deities exist?

and

2. Do you think it's possible to know whether deities exist?

Most atheists are also agnostics--one can be both. But there are also gnostic atheists who believe with certainty that no deities exist. some theists are agnostic, too, acknowledging that certainty is not possible, but choosing to believe anyway.

Those are the definitions that the regular atheist contributors agreed to use a couple of years ago, but as I've pointed out many times, the meanings of words are context sensitive. Demographers, for instance, define the words as you do, and it will be hard for them to adjust those meanings because of the body of work that has used them up until now. So in order to understand demographic studies in the more accurate definitions we use here, one has to read the studies and look at the metadata rather than just glancing over the graphs and tables.

American lexicography is still tainted by Noah Webster's hatred of nonbelievers, which he incorporated into all of his dictionaries. Since some lexicographical boards are comprised of members with similar views, some dictionaries are less reliable in defining the words "atheist" and "atheism" than they are in most other contexts.

It's all about context. Know the context, know the meaning. Try to apply one meaning to all contexts and you fall short of understanding and long on foolishness. Deliberately applying the meaning for one context to another is one of the classic fallacies that is used mostly by malevolent manipulators. Is that what you are?

No, don't answer. If you are, you'd only lie...
