This practice is disgusting and BARBARIC and it nauseates me.
1. It is optional, not compulsory. Some women retain their maiden names, and some couples choose to blend their names, separating them with a hyphen.

2. It is just a custom, not a law. Most people follow the custom, either after having thought about their options, or just blindly following tradition. For those who decide to change their names after having considered their options, I'd say the matter is their choice, and your opinions on their choice are not relevant, any more than their opinions on your choice of lifestyle. For those who just followed tradition, how is their following tradition any different from your following your own society's customs, even if your choices are, in their eyes 'disgusting'?

A tiny weird splinter group of a weird ass religion doing weird shit does not quite measure up to the widespread abuse of women in Islamic households. granted religion is used as an excuse for crappy behavior around the world and among different religions but it cracks me up whenever people respond to charges of misogony in Islam with "well so do the _______s"! sounds like a teenager trying to justify bad behavior by pointing out the behavior of others. Like i told my kids "you have control over what you do and how you respond to life and you bear responsibility for your actions, to pawn them off on god or circumstance is nonsense.
Sorry (not really), I'm not buying your argument that islam is far worse than christianity and that nobody should criticize christianity for ANY reason.

As far as I'M concerned, there is plenty of misogyny in BOTH religions. That is why I reject both of them, and will criticize christianity as well. Whether YOU like or approve of my doing so is irrelevant.

You just called your own words 'bad rubbish'.
If I pointing out your own inconsistencies and silliness bothers you so much, then ignore me.
i will not reply to you or ravenclaw after this time unless you and him stop attacking my own religion. this is my request.
i no longer want an apology from you both.

No one here OWES you an apology that I can see.

If you can't handle verbal criticism of your religion (which is WHAT, by the way?) or any other, an atheist forum probably isn't the best place for you to be posting.

Okay, so you are a muslim and according to you, "Ravenclaw and Trisha aren't atheists."

So what. All three of you are on an ATHEIST forum, where religion -- ANY religion -- is criticized on a regular basis. As I said before, no one owes you an apology.

News reports about what muslims are currently doing is not attacking your 'religion'. It's a good thing you don't want an apology, as none will ever be forthcoming, especially after the way you have harrassed me for a year.

The fact is, sarah doesn't know what I believe or don't believe. He has called me everything from xtian, jew, hindu, kaffir, satan, plenty of vulgarities, made threats of violence, etc. I don't believe in any 'holy' books, from any religion.

sarah only came here because he figured everyone would overlook his islamic ideals and bash christians and jews. He sees nothing wrong with beating women, multiple wives, forced conversion, lying, etc.

You are a muslim, and you have the gall to call other people's customs 'disgusting'? Until you stop treating women like property, engaging in 'honor killings', insisting women be supervised by men at all times, prevented from getting an education, forced to wear burqua, etc., you have absolutely no business running about criticizing other cultures or beliefs. Until you reject forced conversion, jihad, killing people by stoning, you have no right to declare anything at all 'nauseating'. You are a hypocrite who demands respect for beliefs that make the dark ages seem like an intellectual paradise, while proclaiming idiotic judgments on others.

More proof that there is no god. If a muslim can write about 'women's rights', and describe a western cultural convention abut women's names as 'disgusting' and 'barbaric' and 'nauseating', and not be struck by lightning by a supreme being offended by the utter hypocrisy on display, then there clearly is no deity policing human behavior.

um, first off I did not say you could not critisize any religion. Mormons are not christians by the traditional definition. I am an athiest and don't particularly like any religion. I was just pointing out that in daily life the ratio of mistreatment of women is very high in islamic countries, I have witnessed it firsthand. You seem overly sensitive to minor coomentary on your criticism. I did not tell you not to comment or critisize.

i have every right to declare anything neuseating.
the custom of women taking their husband's last name is DISGUSTING, BARBARIC AND NAUSEATING!
This custom is not Abrahamic btw, and I have got news for you, it isn't practiced in the middle east by all religious groups.
I reject forced conversion but I don't reject jihad, jihad means to fight against those who come to kill you.
honor killings and preventing women from getting an education is not done in the community i live in. If some muslims do these things, it is not really my own or my religions problem.
Also, i'm a hardcore feminist now, and i'm for women wearing hijabs.

Yuck, when a man and a woman have the same last name, you can't know whether she is his wife or his sister.
yesterday it was raining and i wasn't struck by lightning.
sometimes God leaves dangerous sinners alone to live their lives safely till they die. but when they come back to life on the Judgement Day, he throws them to hell.

there is no God. at least not one as described by the bible or koran, two books written by barbaric tribesmen.

Don't hold your breath on getting an intelligent comment or reasonable debate.
As you can see in the following thread, not a single muslim has anything to say
about any of the articles or news items posted. Instead they - including sarah -
have nothing but personal insults and vulgarities. The thread was started to try
and humiliate me, I use it as a clearinghouse for information.

That doesn't mesh with telling women what to wear.
