8 year old Olivia McConnell had a dream of having the Wooly Mammoth declared the official state fossil of South Carolina. And a law to make it so was on the verge of passage before getting held up on State Sen. Kevin Bryant (R) insistence that the authorizing legislation specify that the God created the mammoth on the "on the sixth day with the beasts of the field." From Talking Points Memo 4/2/14

Until it is acceptable to point and laugh at these anti-science troglodytes, and keep them as, at best, an obscure sideshow to real public discourse, embarrassing things like this will keep happening. Sen. Bryant should have been told by his leadership to keep quiet while the adults were talking. When one is intellectually overmatched by an eight year old, and unashamed of that fact, the pernicious effects of religion based superstition become manifest.

The only worry I see here is the separation of church and state. That amendment seems to never be followed lately.

I find it concerning that this level of arrant nonsense is such a part of the public discourse that it obstructs rational people from transacting the public's business. In most developed countries, if someone as detached from science and reality managed to get elected, the legislative leadership would shunt him to a far corner of the room where he could be safely ignored.

Rampant superstition forming an integral part of how public policy is made makes us a laughingstock.

Oh god that is funny and sad at the same time. Of course the bigots insist that their myth be taught in the place of all others.
