many of us think there could be ten statements of the highest ethical principles, with some specifics, than the ones in the Bible. This is a place where anyone who wants to just discuss wiser ethics can discuss them separately from the theological nonsense.

For instance, honor thy father and thy mother is flawed as is, and as interpreted, to justify forcing children into strict obedience, and to justify brainwashing them. there should be a modification of how that is worded, and it should be accompanied by an honor thy children - do not abuse them, do not abuse them physically or emotionally or psychologically - such as by teaching them that there is a hot hell of punishment.

You mean a commandment like "respect each other"?
It would seem coherent to start with Commandment 1:
"Have no false gods including me."

I like your example. The commandments are all responsibility but yield no rights - very one sided, and therefore doomed to fail.

Societies work best when rights are matched with responsibilities.

If the commandments were more like, "Do not enslave others and in return you shall never be a slave" then I'd take more notice.

that was funny, except I really wasn't intending to imply that the better commandments would come from some godtype being. It has to come from human beings. and it cannot be on a basis of majority rule, either. so it is a difficult question what sort of elite proposals plus popular acceptance would work, if one got very specific. there would be some cultural differences one should respect, and others that I think should yield to some universal notion of what is the good (kind) thing to do.

I like your emphasis on getting people to put themselves in the shoes of others, so to speak. Also we should put ourselves in the paws and hooves of others.
