From the article -- "The boys stepfather, admitted that he beat Roderick with numerous household items, including a belt, a spatula and a wooden paddle, as well as with his hands. Dina Palmer, the boys mother, initially denied involvement in the beatings, but has subsequently confessed to participating in the abuse."

Hopefully they never get out of jail and they are released into the general prison population.

I am completely opposed to capital punishment but I think the gen-pop (as you put it) would deal out some suitable punishment (hopefully over and over and over again).

The article appears here only because it was not posted by the roboblogger, so it wasn't searched for keywords for crossposting.

Its very sad but this kind of thing goes on in every city. Children being beaten, locked up in cages, starved, abused, neglected. This is one case of thousands of cases. Look at the Casey Anthony case in Florida. A child was murdered and thrown away as trash.

What happened to the perpetrator? Not a damn thing because the Jury let her go. What would be interesting to know if Child Protective Services had any prior dealings with this family.

Child Protective Services in my opinion is broken. That organization across the land needs to be more aggressive and effective. It needs to be fixed and revamped.

I normally do not agree with the death penalty but in this case an exception should be made against those nutjob asshats that kill kids for no f'n reason.

One of the reasons I posted a link to the original story is that it shows a wide pattern of abuse that is needlessly oversimplified by the headline. The boy was not beaten to death for not reading the Bible or even because he lied about it or anything else. He was beaten to death because his stepfather was a monster.

I try to give prospective parents little advice--I remember being overwhelmed and offended by unsolicited instructions from a surprisingly wide range of acquaintances and strangers. But I do invariably suggest two things: if they smoke, now is the time to stop to avoid modelling that behavior; and to never, ever, ever resort to spanking or inflicting physical pain as punishment. The latter can open up psychological doors in a parent that are hard to close, and, for some, even harder to keep from escalating into more serious abuse, even, as in this case, murder. Not worth the risk.

I might have killed this story if there wasn't already a comment when I first saw it. The Bible and the parent's Christianity are red herrings that draw attention away from the real issue just to say, "Here's what the nasty Christians are doing now." Most of the Christians I've known over the years have been good parents who don't deserve to have this incident thrown in their faces. Doing so is unkind and unjust, and seeing other atheists doing so makes me feel ashamed.

The most noble of human attributes is simple human kindness. We stray from it at our peril.

Guess Mommy and Daddy missed this bible verse:

Luke 17:2

It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.

This should be slowly carved over and over into their flesh, as in Kafka's In the Penal Colony.

I think that they were sticking with Leviticus or were illiterate.
