Atheism Is Patriotic Banner to Fly Over NYC July 4

Jul 3, 2012 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: American Atheists

American Atheists announced today that they will be flying a banner over New York City on July 4th. The banner behind the airplane will read, “Atheism Is Patriotic – atheists.org.”

Dave Silverman, President, said, “In 2011, American Atheists attempted to fly a banner in all fifty states on July 4th, but ran into discrimination from companies that refused to fly the banner. This year we are concentrating on New York City where the most powerful symbol of American freedom resides: the Statue of Liberty.”

Sorry. Even though I'm an Atheist I find this offensive. The truth should speak for itself. People selling BS need flying banners.

No need to be offended. Free country. It's just one harmless way to convey a message or make a point.

If truth simply spoke for itself there might be little need for discussion.

(Maybe there could be compromise - no atheist sky-banners and no 'God' in oaths or on money?:-)

I love airplanes. I look up whenever I hear an engine ... jet or prop doesn't matter. Seeing "the wings of eagles" towing an advert ... I dunno ... sacrilege somehow. It's like atheists and airplanes should be better than that. We sully ourselves.

How much great art and great literature has been inspired by atheism?

Face it, for emotional appeal Christmas and Halloween have Labor Day beat!

What banner does atheism fly? A large blank space with a small question mark?

I'm okay with it it's better to say something than to silently stand and listen to christians claiming that atheists can't be patriotic

Atheism isn't about inspiration, it is simply a position. The denial or rejection of a claim that a deity exists.

Now, that doesn't mean there aren't great artists, musicians, architects, etc. that are atheists. You can draw inspiratin from many things, not just religion.

And as for a banner, does theism have a banner?

'God' is on money, in the oath of allegiance and court walls.
But perhaps the idea came with Bush41's comment in mind?..

Not much was inspired by disbelief in pixies either.
Atheism has inspired some websites, writing and ditties like these..
http://www.atheismuk.com/2012/03/31/atheism/y...

Steve Martin's 'Atheists Don't Have No Songs'..
http://www.youtube.com/watch...

Humanism, empathy, experiences, science, morality and philosophy have inspired a great deal. So has critical thinking.

Religion is just superstition.
