Atheists, go hunting where the ducks are
Greta Christina has an interesting post addressing the concerns that organized atheism, by picking up social justice issues , would be courting controversy and alienating people when you want to attract people.

"Organized freethinkers" is a contradiction in terms. Atheists share no common core of belief other than skepticism about the existence of god(s). Beyond that, organizing atheists is an activity quite similar to herding cats.
Just as fundamentally, most atheists are not interested in recruiting anyone for atheism. We all found our own paths here, and future atheists will have to find their own paths. At best, our goal, if you can call it that, is just to show by example that a life without god does not imply amorality, and to ask the questions that provoke thought. Where there is thought, all possibilities are on the table.

Grating Christina is down there with those like Pat Condell, Ted Rall, Camille Paglia and Amanda Marcotte. Their egos have gotten so large because of their fame that they think no one is allowed to disagree with them anymore, that no one possibly could disagree with them.
They act exactly the same as loutmouthed rightwing christian writers, those who seek to silence disagreement instead of addressing it.

Beyond that, the original article contains an unspoken assumption that all atheists share common values, and that all atheists would be attracted to the causes the author supports. Ayn Rand was an atheist. I doubt the causes she would support would be the same as those the author deems worthy. I suspect there are an ample number of conservative atheist, many of whom do not reveal their lack of faith because of the dominance of theists on that side of the aisle.
