Only 7% think being Christian is important for being British

A new report from the think tank British Future (pdf) looks at what it means to be British. Among a wealth of fascinating data, the poll conducted for the organisation finds that just 7% of Britons agree that being Christian is an important attribute for being British. http://www.britishfuture.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/State-of-the-Nation-2013.pdf

This compares with 50% who say that Britishness equates with respect for people's right to free speech — even if you don't agree with them — 46% with respect for the law, 41% with speaking English, 38% with treating men and women equally, 29% with respect for all ethnic backgrounds, 26% with respect for all faiths, 26% with being born here, and 21% with voting in elections. Only being white (6%) scores lower than being Christian.

Religion in the UK is kind of like the Bruce Willis character in the Sixth Sense.

It's dead and doesn't know it.

"...The survey asked respondents,‘Here are some proposals regarding state schools. In each case, do you support or oppose the proposal?… Make all state schools secular, and stop them having special links with the Christian, Jewish, Muslim or any other religion.’ 49% supported this proposal, with 38% opposing..."
I would have expected the ratio to be better than 4:3. This result could have been influenced by wording, context and occasion. I would expect a larger majority of people in the UK to say that they don't want children segregated according to their parents' religious delusions.

"Demographically, the number citing being Christian peaks among the over-45s (11%), those with no formal educational qualifications (11%), and readers of right wing newspapers such as the Daily Mail and Daily Express (12%)."

Of these three "peaks", the last two are not in the least bit surprising.

Except Bruce Willis' character's motivations were good.

Atheism and Religion are but two sides of the same coin.

One prefers to use its head, while the other relies on tales
