One has to wonder in which discipline Dr. Shrum earned his degree. A real scholar would at least look at the studies about which he writes before publishing such an opinion piece. If he had, he would have known that 18% of nones describe themselves as religious and 37% as spiritual but not religious, leaving less than half to fall into the category of nonbelief. This according the a Pew study and Pew being one of the major U.S. research groups whose studies gave rise to the "nones" category in the first place. the same study found that only 12% of nones describe themselves as atheists and 17% as agnostics.

A recent gallup poll found that belief in God has fallen to 76% of american adults. But Pew and ARIS studies make it clear that the subpopulation of nonbelievers includes the affiliated as well as nones. Shrum's simplistic assumptions simply don't hold up. His questions, which are based on those assumptions, don't hold up any better. The same is true of his conclusions.

In the 21st century, religion is a house of cards. Religion is superstition.

Nones aren't all atheists or agnostics. A lot of them are people who didn't want to put 'other, please specify'. a lot of people have beliefs, ideas,...... which don't fit into either atheism or common religions.

My take on it, is that nones are the ones who question everything, including life's big questions. Christians answer with whatever they can quote from their bible and if they end up without an answer they say platitudes like, have faith, God has a plan, we don't know the mind of God,.....

If you have a personal delusion you're called insane, if you share yours with others you're called religious/faithful
