Atheism can only be thought of as a religion if one denies without peer reviewable evidence the possibility that any form of deity could exist.

Very few Atheists come under this description.

Almost all Atheists will be a 6 or 6.x on the following belief scale. The position at the top of this post is belief 7.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectrum_of_thei...

As certain believers dishonestly try to group all Atheists into the 7 category, I prefer to use the term "non believer". I have no particular religious fervour for the word "Atheist."

Agnostic seems to describe many atheists when they examine their beliefs.

Non-believers don't have any religious beliefs. Agnostic, atheist and secular are useful terms due to religion.

Religion = superstition
Theology = mythology

Clerics will take their place in history beside witchdoctors, druids and medicine men - and the sooner the better.

There is no debate. Not amongst atheists, anyway.

Definitely not. Atheists are not religious, look at the term for god's sake. A (without) theism (religious belief). The term speaks for itself. Those who think atheists are religious in any way are id!ots.

Is "bald" a hair color?

It's not an "age-old" debate. It is a recent political machination of the fundamentalist Christian American right.

If they say "Atheism is a religion" enough times, people will eventually be worn down to accept that it is.

The next step is for Christians to claim in court that, if the public schools teach one religion (i.e. the now-accepted religion of atheist, secular values -- as in evolution discussions), then they must give equal time to other religions (i.e. Christianity).

It's definitely part of a strategy. Whether it works or not remains to be seen.

In other words, no. Only the truly erroneous thinkers will even think of equating atheism with religion. I don't honestly know where this whole applesauce about atheism being a religion came up, but it's got to end.

This misrepresentation won't end soon because some believers fixate on the one rarely relevant definition of Atheism that denies the possibility of any god without requiring evidence to back up that position. This is an irrational belief, just like religion.

This is why I prefer the term "non believer" - believers really struggle to misrepresent that.

Your right. The problem lies with religious people believing despite any evidence, and atheists not believing because of no evidence. They see this as equal footing, somehow, even though it's obviously not.

I think for many religious people, they know they have no proof, and can see the problem with religious claims. In order to try and debate an atheist, they want to try and bring us down to their level of ignorance. A good example of this is them shifting the burden of proof. Or claiming evolution/"dawrinism " as atheistic doctorine.

I don't think this is going to change anytome soon, because their religion does make them delusional to alot of reason and reality.

You continually obsess over this, but you don't realize there's nothing inconsistent about that. Atheism is the lack of belief that there is a god. One can fail to be persuaded that a god exists even in the absence of irrefutable proof of no god. By analogy, I do not believe in ghosts. I find the evidence put forth by believers in ghosts unpersuasive. Yet, I am cognizant that there exists at least a possibility that I may be wrong in my assessment of the evidence. I merely ascribe such a low probability to the existence of ghosts that the remote possibility that I am wrong does not give me pause, and I base my actions on the far more probable premise that there are no ghosts, so I need not take the possible existence of ghosts into account.

Theists posit the existence of a deity to which they attribute qualities that would be essentially immune to human perception. Such a being inherently cannot be positively refuted, or positively proved. In assessing whether such a thing exists, we can only a) examine the evidence and come to a conclusion about the probability or improbability of its existence or b) abandon reason as the tool for thinking about the question and simply believe or disbelieve as a matter of faith. Neither option allows either believer or nonbeliever to assert categorically, based on the existence of conclusive proof either way, that god exists or does not exist.
