Tony Perkins: Atheists Can't Be Chaplains
Perkins suggests that nonreligious chaplains are a "bizarre" idea, adding that "by definition, a chaplain's duties are to offer prayer, spiritual counseling, and religious instruction."

As posted on that site:
[Advocates] argue that nonbelievers suffer the same fear and pain that affects every service member. But isnt that why the military has psychologists?
A soldier who visits a psychologist has that visit put on his permanent record, and it might hurt promotion prospects or be misused by "command" if false accusations or personal conflicts ever arose. When a christard or other theist visits a chaplain for "counseling", there is NO RECORD kept.
So, atheists can't ask for help without a black mark being put agaist them, while religitards can get unlimited "counseling" from chaplains without a single mention of it anywhere. And braindead religious dimwits claim that is "equal"?
The issue isn't whether an atheist can be a chaplain.
The issue is government establishment of religion. By paying people for religious activities, the US government IS ESTABLISHING RELIGION. It may be providing a variety of "chaplains", but by only doing it for most world views, by ignoring and denigrating the world view of some, it is STILL establishing religion.
The other issue is the harassment, bigotry and punishment against atheist and other non-affiliated soldiers. When cult members attend a cult meeting, they are exempt from physical labour on bases. Those who don't attend are expected to work. The religious bigots falsely claim it is a "choice to keep working" when in fact it is deliberate punishment for not joining the popular cults.
And that's without mentioning the regular harassment and physical assaults perpetrated by cultists against those who refuse to join, the "officers" who misuse their rank and authority in order to harass, intimidate and abuse those under their command for not joining their cult.
Either EVERYONE has access to chaplains of their own world views and belief systems, or NOBODY has chaplains. Only a cowardly scumbag (read: religious nutball cultist) wants a double standard.

More important, atheists can't be Tony Perkins. Once you start to think for yourself, instead of being a spokesperson for all the indoctrinators who've hammered their superstitions into your head, you can't go back.

We desperately need Atheist "Chaplains".
Nevermind that atheists in that role would not fit the classic definition of "chaplain" as they wouldn't council their patients with religious woo.
But, due to the mountain of regulations concerning the privileges, rights and access that regular chaplains enjoy, we would call these secular councilors "chaplains" anyway.
It would be a convenient legal fiction-- so there would be no need to re-write all the existing regulations to include the atheist versions.
Exactly why "civil union" is insufficient (due to the mountain of existing laws using the word "marriage") having a parallel atheist "not-a-chaplain" wouldn't work.
Atheist Chaplain it is.
