Israel means 'struggle with God'

There are 54 comments on the The Jewish Journal story from May 30, 2012, titled Israel means 'struggle with God'. In it, The Jewish Journal reports that:

Years ago, a Muslim woman called my radio show and asked me why I was not a Muslim. She asked this question with complete sincerity, and I answered her with equal sincerity.

The name of her religion, I told her, is Islam, which in Arabic means submission (to God). The name of the Jewish people is Israel, which in Hebrew means struggle with God. I’d rather struggle with God, I said, than only submit to God ...

tsss, you must be one of those that only read badly redacted( for a reason) excerpts instead of reading the full legal arguement, pro-and contra. darn hard given the archaic language.
But i get rather tired correcting people because they can't read and be patient enough, and understand enough to read the whole.
It becomes really annoying if they redacted it to feed their prejudice and i have to find the actual legal arguement.
Times do change and we can be darn happy the law did too here in the west. Law evolves with societies, it's not congealed.
Thus your understanding must be?
Of course, that is a good question.('Thus your understanding must be'...) But not all wish to expose themselves as to what their understanding is.

I know you have a hard time getting allegorical though, and at the same time understanding that it has an overreaching meaning that simply does not care about denial or puny literal interpretation, that usually makes the tanakh out to be the pedestal for other religions like christianity and islam or for some misguided atheist to kick against. It simply never happened in europe or america so why all the hysterical screaming!
Read it like any other mythology that are usually equally interesting in worldviews.

This story is a metaphor eh? According to the Ju's it really happened...
Jacob Wrestles With God
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/...
.
and it says he was dreaming of wrestling with a man not God.
But then he says this also...
Genesis 32:22-32
30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying,“It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”
.
Another one claiming to see God face to face...
.
Yet we have this...

Topix takes the liberty of dishing content around if one of the posters points in some direction.
So deal with it.
A bit of a good atheist must be up to that task.
(Though i haven't read any good ones lately)

The 9/11 truther is a messianist, so be prepared for confusion.

implementing the Torah is what they are struggling/rebellious/contenti ous/disobedient about, their rabbis making up all kinds of excuses and "evolution" to the Law,
God to Amos: The rebellion of Judah, they have rejected the Torah of YHWH and have not kept His commandments (Amos 2:4)
Jesus to pharisees: You void the commandments of God on account of the tradition of your elders. Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you, you take the precepts of men instead as commandments (Matt 15:3, Mark 7:8)
Stephen to sanhedrin: You are just like your fathers, who have received the Law but have not kept it (Acts 7:53)
Paul: They only brag about having the Law (Rom 2:23), but do not keep the Law themselves (Gal 6:13) lol
Quran: The likeness of those entrusted with the Torah but do not uphold it, is like a donkey merely carrying books (62:5)
So we have the opinion of a prophet, as in commentery on society then ...long dead, past tence, relevant in his time and part of that history.
And then we get a lot of churchfather made up crap that you think somehow relevant, and that you think should make some impact.
Well it doesn't.

not does it help i understanding how modernizing is helpfull and has been the way forward.
Conservatism and denial of evolution and evolving ideas do not deny the fact that this happens in the real world.

Golden calf etc.
YHVH not a fixture of the religion yet.
So if you call struggle with god arrogance, you are saying that unthinking submission is all islam has to offer.
Not very good in recall now are you.
The same struggle would be named jihad!

Another topic turned stupid.

Who did Adam, Noah, Abraham, and Isaac worship if there was no fixture of God, as you put it?

also, wasn't there a fairly speedy reaction from Moses in concert with God when the Israelites were found to be worshiping the golden calf?

Directly translated, Israel means "struggle with God." However, when Israel was established in 1948, it was given the name "Israel" to mean only struggle, referring to the struggle of the Holocaust many European Jews faced.

Jacob wrestled with the angel, it was not a dream. Genesis 32:22-. That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two maidservants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. Then the man said,“Let me go, for it is daybreak.”
But Jacob replied,“I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
The man asked him,“What is your name?”
“Jacob,” he answered.
Then the man said,“Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,e because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome.”
Jacob said,“Please tell me your name.”
But he replied,“Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.
So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying,“It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”
The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel,g and he was limping because of his hip. Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon. http://niv.scripturetext.com/genesis/32.htm
