If you want to know my story, EMS, I grew up in the typical middle class Methodist home. We went to church every sunday. I love going to church because of the music. They didn't sing traditional hymns. They had full orchestra accompaniment....as a child born for the stage, this was awesome for me. I realized very early, probably around 11, that none of the indoctrination made any sense whatsoever. I tried very hard to please my parents and swallow that godwalloping pill that they were trying to get me to take. I went through confirmation, still struggling to believe this crap, but to no avail. I just faked it. As a teen, I tried again with church camp which totally saturated teens with the "holy spirit" but still.....no connection. I kept thinking that there must be something wrong with me that I couldn't get that "godly, wonderfully warm feeling". As I got older, I felt less pressure to attend church. After reading a few atheist writings, I realized that I was born and would always be an atheist. I realized that there is absolutely nothing wrong with me, I had nothing to apologize for and that I am decent and moral without needing to acknowledge any higher power.

Or you could live in Egypt and convert from Islam to Christianity; that's not just hard...it's a capital offense. Then again that might cover going from Islam to anything. The only way to be a Christian there is if you move there as a Christian. Otherwise your Islam or dead.

There are actually christians in Egypt :

The Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria[1] is the official name for the largest Christian church in Egypt. The Church belongs to the Oriental Orthodox family of churches, which has been a distinct church body since the Council of Chalcedon in AD 451, when it took a different position over Christological theology from that of the body of churches that would later split into Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches. The precise differences in theology that caused the split with the Coptic Christians are still disputed, highly technical and mainly concerned with the nature of Christ. The foundational roots of the Church are based in Egypt but it has a worldwide following. According to tradition, the church was established by Saint Mark the apostle and evangelist in the middle of the 1st century (approximately AD 42).[2] The head of the church and the See of Alexandria is the Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of All Africa on the Holy See of Saint Mark, currently Pope Shenouda III. And at the moment 20% of Egyptians belong to the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria,[3] though other churches also claim Patriarchates and Patriarchs of Alexandria; among them

Ouch, that's rough. I STRONGLY dislike the KKK's beliefs. I can't understand how a group of people could late hate define their lives. Besides if I were a klansman I'd have to get rid of the majority of my friends LOL.(I have a lot of Jewish and African-American friends.

That's messed up, I mean yeah I'm a Christian and I disagree with you on a theological level but seriously to damage a person's property or to hurt/hate someone over it. That's ridiculous... that's pretty much on the same level of "mmmm, I'm gonna get me a BLT" "I HATE LETTUCE! DIE!"

Makes about the same amount of sense anyway.

Some Christians clearly need to read the scripture.

Thou shalt not kill.

There is a verse about using the same tongue you use to praise God to curse your brother who is made in God's image

There is a verse stating if you hate your brother you are a murderer.

Most importantly...love one another.

How do people get so misled?

I am a female, caucasian atheist. Being an atheist brings about all kids of stereotypes. People think that I am some kind of child hating, murderous woman. They fail to truly get to know me, as a person, or gain insight on what I am really like. People assume a lot about me, without ever seeking to know the REAL me.

So much for the "loving and accepting" Christians. They all secretly wish that anyone who believes otherwise would just FO and die. They want nothing to do with tolerance.....only their own version of bigotry.

I lost friends that I had known me for years when I actually finally said, "I'm atheist". The "friends" usually responded something like "well, we know you aren't religious, but you believe in a god, right?...some sort of a god or higher power..."

I don't rue the loss.

No, I do, since I counted them as a friend, and suddenly they saw me as some sort of thing to shield themselves, kids and such from. And I was still the same old me I'd ever been.

On the flip side, many theist friends I did retain, and there is no issue at all.

You wanna know who your friends are? Tell them you are atheist.

That isn't an issue any longer, I let it be known up front.

Saves disappointment.
