"This week, she gained a whole new audience and the reassurance that she's not alone. Her essay on CNN iReport,“Why I Raise My Children Without God,” drew 650,000 page views, the second highest for an iReport, and the most comments of any submission on the citizen journalism platform."

“She opened all the windows and doors in the house, brought me to the door, held my shoulders and shook me while screaming,‘Satan, get out of this child!’,‘Satan, leave this child alone!’.”
That is the madness superstitious religous beliefs can generate.

She says she 'knows' why people believe in god? "The idea of God and an afterlife gives many of us structure, community and hope." And she says she doesn't want religion to go away. I feel inclined to disagree with her somewhat on those points and I think she fails to note the damage superstition often does in a modern society,(e.g. ID/Creationism; child mutilation; anti-gay & anti-women sentiments; Zionism; Islamism; etc).'Acts of faith'(like belief in afterlives) seem to me inherently dangerous and harmful.

I think that religion persists for many more reasons than she notes. I think the world will be better if religion goes away (and I think it eventually will) because the sects divide people from one another. Communities should be inclusive of all, not just those who follow a superstitious dogma. Reliigon certainly shouldn't divide or segregate children in schools,(e.g. NI & Bosnia).

Clearly, two important principles are 'separation of church and state' and 'freedom of and from religion'.

Great article. When I have kids, I will not lie to them either about Santa or God.
