All Marxist communists are atheists. Among non-Marxist communists some are, some are not. The early christians lived together, held all things in common and sold their possessions to raise money for the relief of the poor. Sounds fairly communistic to me, at least in the original sense of the word. Some groups, like the Shakers, were christian and lived communally. The late 18th and early 19th centuries saw many non-Marxist socialist groups.
On the other hand, only a small percentage of atheists are communists. Ayn Rand, for example, was about as far from communist as you can get, and her atheism was perfectly compatible with her economic theories. In fact, it escapes me how anyone can profess to be a christian and simultaneously support the Paul Ryan budget, without having their head explode from cognitive dissonance.
