It is not simply "traditional" marriage, it is also "scriptural" marriage. There is not one iota of evidence of a same-sex marriage in the Bible's commands concerning marriage or examples of married people.
Andrus must have known that his presence would be a lightning rod for controversy; why else would he attend, obviously without being invited?
If he was there "to crash the party," one can understand the Catholics' reaction. If he was there in the spirit of brotherly love and support, it would seem that he would have announced, in advance, his plans to attend and his purpose for being there. He may have been welcomed under those circumstances. A loose cannon is not usually welcome at a religious ceremony. But what do liberals care about decorum?
It reminds me of the anti-war people who crash the funerals of servicemen, which, of course, is now upheld by the courts. Come to think of it, maybe Andrus should sue the Catholics. The liberal courts of California will undoubtedly declare it a right for liberals to "crash" conservative services. It is a sign of the time and, very likely, the end times.

How is it that a Roman Catholic archbishop can be characterized as "outspoken" in his support of traditional marriage?

Isn't support of traditional marriage also the position of the RC Church?
