Atheism+: the new New Atheists

Aug 23, 2012 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: New Statesman

This new movement has an energy that makes it hard to ignore.

Let me introduce you to Atheism+, the nascent movement that might be the most exciting thing to hit the world of unbelief since Richard Dawkins teamed up with Christopher Hitchens to tell the world that God was a Delusion and, worse than that, Not Great.

Less than a week old in its current form, Atheism+ is the brainchild of Jen McCreight, a Seattle-based biology postgrad and blogger at the secularist Freethought network. She has called for a "new wave" of atheism on that "cares about how religion affects everyone and that applies skepticism to everything, including social issues like sexism, racism, politics, poverty, and crime."

As much as I complain about Seattle, sometimes we do things right, like this.

Ya think? I just see yet another wannabe trying to attain celebrity status by claiming leadership over the leaderless.

Dust in the wind.
True, but a shame really.

The non-religious far outnumber Jews in this country but we have almost no political power because we are the "leaderless".

It may not always be that way. We humans have an almost universal compulsion to join with others, to be a part of something larger than ourselves. This may be at odds with the skeptical individualism that tends to characterize the current crop of atheists, but as we become more numerous, I suspect that nonbelievers will coalesce into subsets represented by secular, charitable, service and other organizations that will arise to fill the voids left by religion as it retreats. Or perhaps some of those functions will be picked up by the various levels of government, creating opportunities for service currently available almost exclusively to the faithful.

Interesting point, but, unbelief in anything is far less of a rallying cry than belief in something. The commonality of believers gives them a coherence that shared disbelief doesn't. Both atheists and christians are non-believers in Zeus, Baal, Ra etc.. Yet, that does not create the feeling that we are somehow on the same team. Leaders only lead people who have a core of shared beliefs. If there were a venn diagram of atheists based on belief in Marxism, free market capitalism, republicanism, etc. there would be overlap only on the unbelief in god. It is hard to be a leader when the followers don't agree on anything.

Besides group political clout, though, I think it's likely that we have the same level and type of influence that Jews have as individuals and for the same reasons; like Jews, we tend to be well educated and influential within our professions. We may have few roles in the shaping of national policy, but I suspect that our roles in shaping society is disproportionate to out numbers.

There are atheist groups out there, but the fact is that the only thing we share in common is a non-belief in deities. Aside from issues like prayer in school, we don't have much to unite us.

That doesn't mean we can't affect others; getting the word out online or in person can get others thinking about whether their faith is true or not.

Flucking idiot! Do you worship other religitards?

Yeah, I guess the answer to that, would be yes. There is your poop and the all the shaman/witch doctors/spell casters/priest, who all bend over, for the biggest imaginary narcissist ever.

Even so, should you ever wake up and begin to smell the coffee, know that we atheist are not known for following in any footsteps, not even each others.

What we are known for, you loser fluckwad, is the complete absence of any, or all sorts of theism.
