Yes and later verses supersede older ones.Abrogation:
"Quran 2:256:There is No Compulsion in Religion
The Koran-verse above is from the early days when Mohammed started out and was still weak. Later on the tune changed.
When he came to power, he said:
3:85, If anyone desires a religion other than Islam, never will it be accepted of him;
8:39, And fight them on until there is no more fitnah (dissention) and there prevail justice and faith in Allah altogether and everywhere."
This is but a small example among hundreds where his tune has changed over time.
And then we have the Hadith collections which put another spin on the words of the koran.

But it must be said that while islam has been most detrimental to Indian civilization in the past, today most indian muslims are very moderate and of the sufi kind, who are mostly into mysticism, singing and dancing, arts and acting in movies. Like AR RAHMAN, Nargis, Katreena Kaif, Shah Rukh Khan etc etc.
And India affords them space to think differently and many educated ones like Zaved Akhtar and Farid Zakaria are well known atheists or loosely religious (closet atheists).
