Sterling was on Lock down Christmas Eve through... how sad. Someone got stabbed on Christmas eve! or the night before. Does anyone know who did it, or who was stabbed? When will the violence stop? The Prison system needs to segregate the gangs! can you believe they put gang rivals together??? who will stand up and write the Govener, and heads of Prison departments to change this? California segregates the gangs in their prisons, and there is less violence. Comment please.

Not only do I not know who was stabbed Joan or who did it, but its the first Ive heard of it and its a worry because Ive not heard from my son. Sterling is a horrible prison. They treat the prisoners like animals, even those who are there for non violent crimes and who have some mental issues and must be there because thats the only prison where they can get treatment. Parents are never notified and so you sit and worry. If you call you are treated like the lowest common person and given less then any information.

Try writing the heads of departments. Your letters are funneled back down to the prisons and your loved one suffers. Its a bad idea.

Your'e obviously not speaking from any sort of personal experience. Sterling is not the only prison in the state that offers mental health services. Sterling is also the only prison in the state that has the capacity to house inmates of all custody levels. It houses the offenders on death row as well as offenders of all custody levels. Not only are the offender not treated like animals but many other "stabings" have been averted because of the work of the correctional officers. I implore you to remember that at any given time the ratio of correctional officers to offenders is 1 to 100. They do good work haven't recieved a pay raise in nearly 8 years and on some ocassions have also given thier lives while at work.

With God all things are possible. Nothing shall be impossible with God. I am praying for revival in Colorado Prisons. That men turn to God, and accept Jesus as their Lord.

Well Im speaking from experience! And on more then one occasion I've visited my brother and felt tension and lack of respect from "CO"s . Granted your lives are on the line everyday but you chose that job! For anyone to choose that as a career.... Your probably considerd a quote on quote "Hard Ass" not saying that all correctional officers are rude and disfunctional but there is an abundance that should be caged next to #"127563" I get that theres a unimaginale amount of sick angry agressive individuals that have to be controlled. My issuse is the COs that go above and beyond when control is no longer the theme and harassment is the motto! I can agree with the animal treatment at the Sterling facility. The forgotten ones just because they are an inmate. You are right that the Sterling facility is the worst place for anyone. They keep TBI inmates there just to collect all that incoming money that family and friends send. Yes, they treat family and friends, anyone from the outside walls of the facility with no respect. You are ordered around and made to feel you did something wrong when all you are doing is visiting a loved one. I viewed a forum on Prison Valley and read several forum posts. I laughed at the posts from people who wrote as to how nice it all was. Sterling is not nice, it is cold, hard and a place I have visited twice and came away in tears. It reminds me of the closed down prison in Rawlins, Wyo. People need to wake up and know just what really does go on behind those prison walls and most of it is not from the inmates. Ask any inmate inside there and they will tell you what happened in detail.

Carol, I totally agree with you. What people do not understand about Sterling is the fact that'some of the CO's have become hardened and jaded. They use their power to believe they are better than another human because they wear a uniform. They have power to pick favorite little inmates to do their dirty work. They do not read files and they ignore issues and do whatever they want with no reprucussions. When you do call to file formal complaints, they take it out on the inmates. They make things so bad that an inmate literally becomes more unstable and then put in the hole which then make things even worse. They treat inmates inhumanely like they are not people. Keeping in mind that some of those inmates do not even belong there based on wrongful conviction issues which in our judicial system in Colorado is hard to prove. They all stick together and trying to see our Governor? That is the biggest joke of all. Yes inmates get hurt and killed and I would guess that it is because of the actions of the guards. I understand they deal with alot of crap as well, but they have choices, inmates don't. It also cost family members alot financially, emotionally and is very stressful. I would love to have a coalition of SCF inmate families help me make these issues public somehow. I respect those that do their jobs at SCF without having retaliation, but I cannot respect the fact that even these people are afraid to stand up to the wrongdoing that happens because they cannot afford to lose their jobs. It is a sad state we live in. Our justice system sucks from the top down and I for one have lost all faith in the justice system in Colorado. There is too much cover up with prosecutors, public defenders and judges. Then on top of it the incarcerated that has been put through this has to live in this type of environment. May God help all involved.
