California should sell its prison with a bay view
#1 Feb 11, 2011
they don't know what they are talking about
the geotechnical problems would be a nightmare
stuff built years ago on fill that would not be allowed for private real estate use
a lot of unforeseen costs
i'd rather have a prison than affordable housing
you can keep a better eye on the tenants many who have the same outlook on life

In other words, you're a NIMBY... Heaven forbid that government should allow anyone who can't afford a million dollar home live within five miles of you.
Most of the prison is not built on filled land, and most, if not all, of the buildings currently there will be torn down if the prison is sold to developers.
Incidentally, where does the article say that the land will be used for "affordable" housing, meaning something your kids can afford until they can trade up to your house after you kick the bucket.

Sell it. Batman is just worried about the job loss. The prisons really need to be out in California's vast sretches of Desert.

Yes sell it . This land needs to be sold to private developers. No need to worry about affordable housing or environmental rules, all those will be changed after we throw the socialist out in 2012. As for job lost, those prison jobs are controlled by union scum. We don't need them here. High income housing is what we need.

If California wants to save money, here is what it needs to do: Cut welfare off; Get rid of worthless state agencies such as Dept. of Aging, ABC, Social Services, etc...; Execute all death row cons (720); Get rid of all counseling and teaching postions in the prison system; Fire all family court judges (absolutely overpaid and worthless); Stop paying civil service workers close to six figure incomes! This will certainly clean things up in about 2 years!
