Well folks, I think we figured out why the state closed all those prisons. Some backdoor BS! NYSCOPBA must have gotten a few kick backs over that deal. It's weird, a few yrs ago we all when out and marched with signs and chats about closing prisons. This year NYSCOBA didn't mention any of it. Just kinda happened.....

New boss at OGS. Where is she from? Oh yeah, Rome. More gluttony for that family, perhaps?

And wait until the cost has risen 50%. Great fiscal management. Maybe friend & family construction companies were to busy with school capital improvement projects to bid.

I read in the paper that the money is for a medical facility for the inmates(they have a separate facility for inmates whose medical condition is more than can be treated in the prison infirmary)..this actually is a good thing, as it keeps the inmate scum out of our local hospitals!(anyone remember about 15 or so years ago when a nurse was jabbed by a needle that was infected with aids from an inmate who couldn't be restrained?) Just think if he had attacked another patient also.!!

This is great news. Walsh Medical has needed more beds for years and years. Many, if not most, of the inmates infirmed there have AIDS and this keeps them out of the general population and out of the community health facilites.

Most of all, I love how it played out. Here's to the prison haters who wanted CUTS, CUTS and CUTS.
Happy now?

Good for Roann, but doubt if she had much bearing on it as it was in the works for many years.

This expansion is in the Walsh Medical Center inside Mohawk Correctional. It only adds about 20 beds. The rest of the expansion is for recreation areas,a chapel and a program area also a mes hall.Thats more than a million per bed. 90% of the inmates in the hospital at Walsh medical center are terminal why do they need to be programmed. This is State spending gone wild.

FYI Walsh is similar to a nursing home any time someone gets sick they go to the hospital. No procedures are performed there. No doctor is on duty 24 hrs a day its just a nursing home.

Prisons aren't supposed to be cozy places. It's PRISON! Jail is supposed to be punitive. Therefore, correctional facilities should have peeling paint, dripping ceilings, cracked floors, terrible food and filthy bathrooms and showers. If more prisons were like this, we'd have less crime and hence fewer need for expensive facilities.

I think it's a total disgrace that the Mohawk Valley is upgrading its correctional facility to the tune of 33 million dollars while Utica has hundreds of derelict houses that need to be torn down. Uticans don't have jobs and there are no opportunities, yet they provide this expensive gift to their inmate population. It just goes to show how out of whack Utica's priorities are.

Most people who drive through Utica are never going to see the inside of the MV jail, so let's put the money to better use by modernizing Utica and attracting jobs and opportunities to the area.
