I'm distraught, yet not surprised about what I've read about the conditions at Dawson State Jail. I'm sad because my daughter left Woodman (where conditions appeared a little more tolerable for her)and has been sent to the heart of Dallas. The posts I have read are fairly current and I hope that my daughter gets thru her sentence with her sweet spirit intact. My daughter messed up,blah, blah, blah, but she is a decent person. People don't need to be treated like animals, regardless of the circumstances. I live in Amarillo so only having a 2 hour visitation is kinda rough. Do visitors coming from out of town get a longer visitation? I'll take what I can get tho! So I am wondering if she'll be able to get her GED while she's in there. Also, I am wondering if there is actually a Christian dorm at Dawson, or is that just bologna? I said I was not surprised that Dawson has horrendous conditions cos I think the penal system could really care less about how inmates are treated. I believe they feel that if you do the crime, you pay the time. Though that is true in theory,it still doesn't mean that a blind eye takes away the problem. State jails shouldn't house TDCJ inmates for any length of time--holdover or not! I understand Texas jails and prisons are overcrowded. Maybe our Texas representatives need to work on the laws that allow for another kind of punishment for non-violent offenders. And maybe people that get caught with minute amounts of drugs could be put under house arrest and monitored via a camera instead of going to jail. Might be a cheaper way, if that's what it's about! I've gotten on a little tirade about the penal system and don't have a clue as to how to change it!I would like to know if it's really that bad there at Dawson, tho. I'm going to just pray as often as I think of my daughter because that's all I can do within my means. God Bless...
my mother is currently serving a two year sentence there and she is part of a Christian program there so yes it does exist. She is always sending me material from their bible studies.

Just for the record...I was there for 20 months and yes.there were some Mondays that we did NOT get tissue and was not available on commissary. So we went without for days.and alot of ppl did NOT get a tray on certain days that they chose to go to church. But when I left, the warden was working on straightening that out.

Hi,

I work with a coalition that is putting pressure on the Texas legislature to shut down Dawson State Jail. We're conducting a vigil across the street from the facility on this Thursday, March 7th from 6pm-7pm, and we welcome the participation of folks who have been incarcerated there, their family members, or any other concerned individuals. For more information please email at kquongcharles (at) grassrootsleadership (dot) org

More information about this event, a petition you can sign, and repor tthat we just released can be viewed here:

Understand that the air conditioner has not been on for the past 2 to 3 weeks. That is inhumane considering there are no open windows for ventilation. Can you imagine?

My wife is in Dawson now and she said the A/c was out for a day or two. She said Dawson is a cakewalk compared to Plane State Jail where she was for 3 weeks. Good food and plenty of it and everyone's been decent to her so far. She minds her business and they leave her alone. We've had 3 contact visits and she's doing well. I go Saturdays during lunch to see her to give her a mid day meal since they do only get 2 meals on weekends.

Shalimar! It's me, your former teacher. The only safe haven and positive atmosphere was in my classroom. I know the prison is well below sub-par, but there was a little light in your day during class I hope :) Did you get your GED?

I worked at Dawson during last Summer. I don't recall any paralyzed inmates laying around for 2 days before going to the hospital. And if we did have one who became paralyzed from a stroke she would have been transferred directly from the hospital to the state medical unit in Galveston. Oh, and nobody died during those summer months. Toilet paper gets passed out EVERY week on Monday night. If you missed a meal it was your own fault. if trays were short then more trays get made. We already know about the male and female inmates having sex and the details were no where near your version. If you want to bad mouth Dawson that is your right, but don't make up crap.
SAD!! you should be ashamed of yourself talking like this about issues that DO exist! I hope one day a loved one goes through everything YOU witnesses and then repeat yourself with these same words then. I used to judge too, NOW, I don't. You my dear will get your turn as well. CARMA1

First and foremost i am deeply joyful to hear that dawson is shutting down. I was sentenced a year of state jail in dawson I got out may of 2011. I see people defending this place that is your right but no one has the right to go without medical attention, almost losing their lives because guards are to lazy or to cruel to even care. It is not ok for guards to tell us our kids are ashamed of us torment us they are no better than anyone they just never got caught. I worked firsthan in the kitchen it was disgusting mice bugs everywher but yet somehow managed to pass inspection then after workin not be able to take a shower. Or when i was bleeding so much i was turning white and fainting and nothing being done. The stories go on and on yes guards did turn their backs while inmates were abused by others, or some even trying to make passes at you it was disgusting. Thank God for Hope that was the only place peace was found and I did something with my time tutored women for their GED and i found my faith again. At that guards were so rude and mean saying we were to chicken or not woman enough for a real dorm I did both dorms and I am woman enough to know I needed God and always will. Shame on alot not all but most of the guards who are so rude disrespectful and outright pitiful youy know if it was one of your loved ones it you wouldnt be that way.I came out a better person but thats what happens when you survuve hell.

I was in Dawson state jail for a 15 month sentence. It's a horrible place. Guards do not care for the inmates, which is kinda ironic because don't they get paid to watch over us? but they don't, they sleep in the pickets' drink, take pills. i once had to bang on the glass to awake the guard to let in another guard in the corridor. i personally seen a guard leave her picket and go in to 7 charlie. and beat up an inmate. another time a guard let a black inmate slap a white inmate, who was on her bunk. and the guard did nothing. in 10 delta. im glad its closed.

I did 14 months in prison. One in county, one in Woodman, and did 12 long months in Dawson State Jail. I was in the Hope program for three months, got kicked out cuz I was using the radio, plus the lady that ran it hated me. All she wanted to do is mess around with the stud inmates. Anyways, I did my last nine months in 9A. We had a open dorm. Men guards would come in there all Thur the night talking to female guards and watch us use the restroom or shower. There were guards that were high all day on something, and the rest slept. I had a bad tooth ache and I asked a guard can I get some non-apron, she told me, we ain't got none. She looked at the box of non-apron and threw them in the trash. Couldn't do nothing about it. Dawson was a hard Unit, medal sucked ass but the food wasn't so so bad and we had heating and A/C! I was friends with a few of the guards there, they all ain't bad, people have their days, and yea they take it out on the wrong person. But they were showing us to never come back. I'm not sticking up for Dawson one bit, I'm glad it is closed.
