This jail is the most disgusting and dirty, unhealthy, disease filled estabishment I have ever been in. Why the Texas State of Corrections doesn't clean it up and hire some competent help I do not understand. I know they are in jail for a reason but should be treated better than a bunch of terriosts in Gitmo. Everything about the joint is depressing including the guards. Lots of over weight and sleeping guards. Where are the supervisors, probably do not care. The food is deplorable and they get two meals a day on the week-ends. I am writing the TDPC and find out who thinks they are doing a good job??? No one is. The medical is the pits and no outside exercise. They give that to murderers and rapist and worse to Deaath Row criminals. Come State get your head our of where the sun does not shime and do your job. I will also call Perry as his chances of getting the nomination is nil, might give him some time to take care of state business including shutting down the border like he brags. He pays illigal aliens tuition so they may attend college. Is he nuts??? Close Dawson down or do something about cleaning it up. People are people and should be treated with some dignity in most cases. Just one mistake doesn't make you a gangster or hard core criminal. All you bible thumpers out there better believe in what the Lord taught, forgiveness, trust in the Lord. Have a good day.

When I was 17, I wrote a check(from my own bank account) for an expensive washer and dryer. I knew I was stealing, and I was wrong and stupid, but that doesn't mean I should be treated like I was at Dawson. Like you said, we're criminals, but that doesn't make us evil. There were times at Dawson where I went without food b/c they ran out of trays. I was there June, July, and August, and the air conditioners were broken. My friend came to visit me and tell me about a news story that nite about how nasty Dawson is, but when me and me fellow inmates went to watch it, the tv mysteriously quit working. There was a girl in my dorm who has a stroke and became paralyzed. It took them almost 2 days to get her to parkland. And they brought her back, and told us if we didn't want her to die, than it was our job to wipe her ass, etc. There was a guard, who for some weed and a bag of chips, looked the other way while the male prisoner maintenance worker forcefully had sex with my bunkmate. She was crying but everyone else was cheering. Nobody got introuble. We get ONE roll of toilet paper every 2 weeks, if we run out they tell us to 'figure it out'. 3 women died in the 3 summer months that the air conditioner was broken, none of these women had prior health problems. Does this sound legal to you? Any of it? Please, let's not be silent about this!

I was taunted and abused by guards the whole time is was at Dawson. If u hav no money in your account, u have to get soap, toothbrush/toothpaste from the guards. They stood me in front of the whole dorm and said, "I do not feel like goin down to get supplies, do any one of y'all feel like helpin her broke ass out?" it was so humiliating. Whenever I showered, the big manly women would stand there and watch, making perverted suggestions. More than once, one would get in the shower with me and force me to do something painful and degrading. I told the warden about one girl slamming my head against the wall so hard I had a huge lump and my whole forehead was black&blue, and the warden laughed and said "haha she got yo ass good". These inmates can't fight from the inside. There are grievance boxes, but at night the guards read them out loud and make fun of the women who wrote them. If the guard finds a grievance that could get him or her introuble, they go punish and threaten the one who wrote the complaint. These ladies need a voice. We can do that for them.

I worked at Dawson during last Summer. I don't recall any paralyzed inmates laying around for 2 days before going to the hospital. And if we did have one who became paralyzed from a stroke she would have been transferred directly from the hospital to the state medical unit in Galveston. Oh, and nobody died during those summer months. Toilet paper gets passed out EVERY week on Monday night. If you missed a meal it was your own fault. if trays were short then more trays get made. We already know about the male and female inmates having sex and the details were no where near your version. If you want to bad mouth Dawson that is your right, but don't make up crap.

The warden laughed and said, "haha she got yo ass good"? The warden at Dawson at the time didn't even talk like that nor did the assistant warden. The chief of security was white so I know you couldn't be talking about him. I can believe the guards at night read the grievances out loud. All they have to do is get those grievances out of locked boxes that even the night shift supervisor doesn't have a key to. Wow, I guess they have magic fingers. As for the no money on your account stuff, what happened to the weekly and monthly issuance you got from the staff? You know, the toothpaste, toothbrush and soap ?

I have been to my share of county jails, from Collin County, Grayson County, Mt. Pleasant County Jail, Denton County jail, I have been to the Choice Moore Unit in Bonham,Texas, Beaumont State Prison, JasperTexas to the Gurney Unit and Gatesville The Woodman Unit. I am not trying to brag what so ever. I don't enjoy going to these places but when you have a loved one in one of these places you can't just turn your back on them. Just because they are in there doesn't make you quit loving them. But anyways to the point. I have never in my life been to the most nasty, disgusting, gross, down right inhuman, place in my life. How can this be legal. It's not safe what so ever. It's bad when you can't even use the rest room. You have to wait 2-3hours to even get into see your loved one. So you go around 5 hours without using the restroom because you are scared of what you might catch or you have to step in human feeces. There is no paper towels, no hand soap. I can only imagine what the kitchen is like that they are feeding our Loved ones out of. I just pray to the Lord Jesus above to take control. He our Father knows just as well as we visitors and the inmates knows just how bad this place really is. Also! Want to talk about InHuman! My sister has dentures. They made my sister mail her dentures home and she has to eat just with her bare gums. Now that puts the icing on the cake. Well I hope I get my point across. But most of all I hope my prayers are answered. In Jesus Name Amen.

I go and visit my daughter who is in that horrible place. I pray to God daily to protect her and bring her home safe. I have witnessed first hand on most of the officers, they are very rude and unprofessional. They spend most of there time focused on eating and sleeping. When I come to spend time with my loved one I will not be treated with disrespect and unprofessional attitudes. I work for a state agency and I know about the pros and cons, different officers behavior and character. But what I have seen at Dawson State Jail is by far what I would ever called a professional working atmosphere. "GHETTO" is the word for this place.

It is not a good place (DAWSON) and some of the staff does treat you kind. You can feel the oppression the minute you walk in. Some of the guards there are kind. Most are just doing a job until they find something better. Some are just plan rude. All I want to do is visit and it not turn into a horriable thing. So far it has been good. The one thing I did not like is how they do not let the inmates go to the restroom during visiting hours. They make them sit there until they almost pee themselves. I know it is because of the sneaking in of drug thing, but man they need to think harder on this. I do worry about my girlfreind.....that place is just not a very good place to be locked up.

I'm distraught, yet not surprised about what I've read about the conditions at Dawson State Jail. I'm sad because my daughter left Woodman (where conditions appeared a little more tolerable for her)and has been sent to the heart of Dallas. The posts I have read are fairly current and I hope that my daughter gets thru her sentence with her sweet spirit intact. My daughter messed up,blah, blah, blah, but she is a decent person. People don't need to be treated like animals, regardless of the circumstances. I live in Amarillo so only having a 2 hour visitation is kinda rough. Do visitors coming from out of town get a longer visitation? I'll take what I can get tho! So I am wondering if she'll be able to get her GED while she's in there. Also, I am wondering if there is actually a Christian dorm at Dawson, or is that just bologna? I said I was not surprised that Dawson has horrendous conditions cos I think the penal system could really care less about how inmates are treated. I believe they feel that if you do the crime, you pay the time. Though that is true in theory,it still doesn't mean that a blind eye takes away the problem. State jails shouldn't house TDCJ inmates for any length of time--holdover or not! I understand Texas jails and prisons are overcrowded. Maybe our Texas representatives need to work on the laws that allow for another kind of punishment for non-violent offenders. And maybe people that get caught with minute amounts of drugs could be put under house arrest and monitored via a camera instead of going to jail. Might be a cheaper way, if that's what it's about! I've gotten on a little tirade about the penal system and don't have a clue as to how to change it!I would like to know if it's really that bad there at Dawson, tho. I'm going to just pray as often as I think of my daughter because that's all I can do within my means. God Bless...

I visit Dawson every 2 weeks. I agree that it is a horrible place. There are a few decent people who work there and care about their jobs but a big portion of them do not speak good English and are rude. I hate visiting that place.

Our local TV station CBS 11 has reported about the conditions and things that go on there (mostly medical).

I can't wait until I don't have to visit anymore.

In 2010, I took care of the partially paralyzed girl in the J-1 dorm, you should know that one, 10Delta. I personally took care of her on a weekend (Friday through Tuesday), to top it off I had permission to sleep on the floor next to her bunk. While your memory is convenient, mine is not and I can prove it (I live in the same town as the "paralyzed" woman).

There are three female "Christian Dorms" in Dawson, they are located on the tenth floor, they are called Hope Dorms for Hope Literacy. If your daughter has enough time, she can send an I60 to Ms. Lucy for consideration. Hope is not only a Christian Dorm, they also do personal tutoring for the GED.
I do not know the success rate but I can say that a friend of mine got out to become a christian counselor and is at this time continuing her education.

My mom is finishing her 16 month sentence at the end of this month, and the majority of these posts are true. She gets toilet paper once every 2 weeks, is lucky to get a trip to get commissary once a month, and half of her mail is never processed! i go to visit as often as possible, and its never organized. My mom has been in her share of trouble, and usually can make it through without showing when something's bothering her, but FEAR shows when the guards make their rounds to start sending inmates back when the visits are over. Inmates with hepititis are working in the kitchen and inmates with AIDS are housed with other inmates and no special precautious are taken when these inmates get into fights, concerning the other "uninfected" inmates. Dawson is a joke, and for to texas officials to say that they have to investigate is rediculous.
