I understand the concern that the NAACP has in regards to the number of black students that are being suspended from BCS. I think we are not looking at the full picture which alarms many of our teachers. Most black children are being raised by their mothers or grandparents. Many parents despite the efforts of teachers reaching out to them with concerns about their black students' progress in the classroom take no interest. They are not concerned with the behavior and often not their child's grades. Our community should focus on educating the parents on how to provide good study skills at home and how to provide relevant consequences with today's children.
