Teachers keep up strike
A weeklong teachers strike in Puerto Rico is dealing a blow to a public school system struggling to reach U.S. benchmarks and reduce the highest dropout rate in America.

The actual effectiveness of the teachers' strike seems to be rather spotty. On the Northwest corner of Puerto Rico many of the public schools continue to be in session.
The video of strike sites on local television stations seem to be from the San Juan area. Often, the rest of Puerto Rico does not reflect what goes on in San Juan. |

Teachers' salaries are one thing. Poorly-supplied, understaffed, rundown schools are something entirely different.
I'm not sure the teachers are going to be able to get anything done on their own. The condition of the schools affects children more than teachers. Maybe it's time for the parents of those children to arrange to call in "sick" every Tuesday (particularly those who work for the government) until the government takes action to address the problem. Sick days are "use 'em or lose 'em" anyway. |

Puerto Rico, like every other jurisdiction in the US, has initiated a 'home schooling' program for those who want to teach their kids at home.
Puerto Rico also has a more active promotion of the co-operative 'business model' than any of the states. While 'home schooling' is inherently an isolated approach to education, I have often wondered what would keep those who qualify for home school from establishing a co-op model, much like some of my friends with children have 'play dates' for their kids. This is a technique where people get their kids together and a couple watch them all while the rest of the adults get away from the kids for a while. But it would take more organization than the Tuesday 'sick in' for kids. It would also be more effective as a long term solution if organized. Of course, organization is in short supply here on the 'Isla del Encanto.' |
don't you mean the "entitlement island"?....education is PR is a sad joke.... keep it on the island..... |

We wouldn't want them to be educated as well as you. The next time you attempt to 'communicate' try to construct a complete sentence. You English skills are atrocious. Is English your 'adopted' second or third language? Is 'heelbeely' your mother's tongue? Sorry, I mean 'your cousin's tongue?' Oh, I forgot--your mother and your cousin are the same person. |
pedo-in-the-tropics....is that your best shot?....or are you imagining that i am a 12 year old boy?..... back to the topic....education in PR is a sham....keep it on the island.... |

Hardly! I think you are a 45 year old woman. You are correct about the public education system being a sham, however. There is 1 administrator for every teacher. The Secretary of the Department of Education when the Statehood party was last held the Governorship stole $4 MILLION in Fed Funds. He is still in the Federal Penitentiary. Not to worry. Some of the school jurisdictions in Florida are down here hiring Puerto Rican teachers this very minute. Texas is here, too. That's because YOU are getting ready to receive a lot MORE Caribbean Hispanics. When Cuba opens its borders all the movement will be NORTH. The per capita annual income in Cuba is about $4,000 and they have plenty of relatives to move in with. I expect you'll have Hispanic grandchildren, if you don't already. You should call your US congressional representative and both your Senators (well, NOT Martinez--he supports more voting Hispanics in Florida) and demand that Puerto Rico be given independence. Only Congress can change this. If you would rather call Caribbean Hispanics derogatory names, fine. You will have many more to call names NEXT YEAR! |

Government Employees like the teachers are a real bunch of lazies, only work 8 months a year with 2 1/2 months off in the summer.....The Holy Week, the three weeks of XMAS from the Friday before XMAS to the day after 3 Kings...
Throw in the sick leave, maternity leave, vacation leave, seminair time, and take a wild guess how much actual work at the school assignments is made??? These are overpaid babysitters with the juvenile deliquents that comprises over 65% of the classrooms....the Parents don't give a hoot, the school assignments is a joke, homework is a joke and the big deal is beauty contest preparation, modeling, and welding and how to basketweave... The Educational System in Puerto Rico has been a joke since the days of Hernandez Colon and Romero Barcelo.... They boast of glossy and beautiful reports and they can't even cut the grass, have proper maintenance of the buildings and the students are required to bring supplies or tough shit... Politics got into the School Systems and like everything else on this Island, the professional thugs and paid party supporters show up with their thugery and take a good look at these PICS of the marches and protests and confrontations... It's the same professional gangs that has nothing to do with anything...their only mission is to make the opposing party a bunch of idiots and morons and incompetant....chekc out the thugs at teh Paseo Caribe sitye and I am willing to bet you will make some matches... |
... i am sure those PR sad excuses for teachers will be teaching in kissimmee/osceola county.... its a third world country... they will fit in nicely....the current generation of PRs there are more ignorant than the preceding generation..... but assuming you are correct (and that is a reach), i would rather have a cuban influx than a PR.... at least they will learn english, hold a job and appreciate a good education.....nothing like the inhabitants of the ENTITLEMENT ISLAND.... isn't time for you to turn on nick and daydream?..... |

And behind those will be many more coming from 20 different Latin American nations and on day within the next 12 years or so you will become a US minority....Sad but true.... http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/relea... And BTW, FYI, Spanish is not a third world language as it is from Spain and Spain is very European and their Spanish originated from the broken down Roman Empire or from the Roman Latin language itself known as part of the Romantic languages which are Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese, and all 4 Romantic languages are still very much present and spoken in most of Europe today because they all originated in Europe, from Latin itself. You're un-researched comment shows how truly dumb and ignorant you're haters comment above really is. And last but not least this is why you should start learning Spanish as of now or just look stupid and dumb when everyone else around you one day does. http://www.spanish-school.com.mx/learnspanish... |

And BTW, you two face backstabbing, lying hypocrite...Stop saying nice things about Cubans in these Puerto Rican forums as you are not being honest about them either...many of us who do visit our first cousins, the Cubans, see how you terribly trash them too. We will have to invite WJDC to tell us all about you and your beahavior with them at the Cuban forums also, as you hate Cubans too. You hate all Hispanics period....But thank God that the great majority of good hearted Anglo Americans do not think nor feel like you do. Senora Comemierda!! |
