*SCAM ALERT!!* Rental-Data Bureau's (RDB) Predatory practices
If you are seeking rental property in the Portland Metro area you may have run across their "Call RDB" house listing ads online.
Avoid these people and their dubious 'service' like the plague on free society they are. They republish a database of freely obtained house listings from off the net and charge RENTERS $35 to see their substandard imageless database. They illegitimately spam the free classified sites with their 'listings' which are in reality only ads for their website 'service'. They use phony bait and switch tactics by listing enticing properties in their ads that do not exist in the database once you become a member.
If *YOU* feel you have been defrauded by these people PLEASE contact my email below to join a list for a possible future class action.
You should ALSO contact the OR State Attorney General's office and the Better Business Bureau of OR & WA and officially register your complaint.
It is hard enough being a renter in Portland without such predatory vermin preying upon hard working people. These are actual UNSOLICITED posts to craigslist after I posted a SCAM warning:
I tried Rental-Data a few months back, and it was the worse website for Rentals I have ever experienced.
No pictures, no email for the houses/units. Just the address of the home and a name. Nothing big, nothing worth paying for. Totally useless, because most of the rentals on their list, IS ADVERTISED ON CRAIGSLIST!
I am trying to find a home for a family that are transferring here. I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't like to waste their time.
Obviously I am not the only one who feels this way!
This was the biggest rip off. I'll tell you why.
I inquired recently because I always saw their ads. I said I'm looking for Section 8, 3b, possibly four. ONE location.
So I paid the fee so I could get the phone numbers etc. Well, guess what.. After I paid they sent me a link to their website. Where were all the houses he sent me a list of? So I emailed him, with the list of what he sent me, and asked for the addresses and phone number for them.
NOT ONE was in the area I requested. NONE, NADDA, ZIP. And to top it off, only 3 of the houses were Section 8.
Talk about SCAM big time. I was so pissed. I wasted my hard earn money,(ok so it wasn't an arm and leg), but for a single mom who works two jobs, it was A LOT to me.
Then, like the post below, there were no pictures to look at, AND, I found that most of their houses WERE on Craigslist or on the Property Managements website.
Now, I'm still looking for a home, but I will use Craigslist or other websites. I feel like a fool for giving them my money, but I guess it was a lesson learned.

Thanks for posting this. We have a house we *have* to rent out because we were relocated out of state and were not able to sell the house east of Astoria b/f we left. It is the pits being a "landlord" and we are not in it as an investment, or whatever "slumlords" usually own rentals for. We are just everyday people who have a house sitting vacant, a house we lived in and loved, and we have no choice but to rent it out at this time. I posted an ad on C.L. and got an email from Ron Edmonds saying he had a client who might be interested in our house. Thanks to you, I know not to waste my time.

Got the same message - e-mail from Ron Edmonds from Rental-Data.com , he keeps wanting my address. I haven't sent it to him, don't know what would happen if I do.
I am also in the same situation, renting out a home that I love because I have no choice due to the fallen housing market.

Craigslist has posted for years about this scam and others. They are promising the feds to clean up the site so the scammers are branching out to facebook, myspace, youtube, free listings.

I used Rental Data and liked it alot. Searching Craigslist for houses constantly brought up apartments and half of the ads had no addresses. Rental Data did all the ground work for me and every listing had a full address. I dont know what Mr Scott crybaby is talking about because MY LISTINGS included pictures, driving directions, maps and school district info. Everything was completely organized for me according to my needs. Check out the business yourself at www.rental-data.com/p/about_us.com . They did a great job for me and as services go, their cheap!

I joined this website thinking that it had exclusive listings. I had exhausted all of our other leads. We looked at Google, Kijiji, the classifieds, property managements, craigslist and rentals.com . In finding this website we thought we were fortunate to have found a site that has new information, after all we saw homes on there we hadn't found before. However, what they don't disclose is the actual costs. They tell you it is $16 for the first month and $19 thereafter. However, my card was charged $35 dollars for just the first month. They also don't disclose that a fee of $10 will be charged each time you change your preferences. Lets be real when you are searching for a house and you already looked at one area you want to change your preferences to look into another area. Except you will be charged to do so. As well as there listings are all the same ones I found on the internet for FREE!! Search engines like Google, craigslist, Kijiji, renters.com , oodle, the classifieds and newspapers don't receive any money related to this website using them. They aren't listing anything different then what you can find on your own. It is always suspicious when a website doesn't list there address or any contact names as well.
This website is a total SCAM!!! Now I have to try and get my money back. Which they have informed me that because I paid the $35 an hour ago I cannot get a refund for either the full amount paid or a partial payment.

I understand I too have been SCAMMED by this website. It isn't worth $35 for information that is provided for free via the internet. This information is within anyone's reach. Don't get sucked into this. You can find rental information on Google, Bing, Craigslist, mynewplace.com , rentals.com etc. Your doing a little big of leg work on your own will save you a huge fee. They aren't willing to give me back my money for having been on this website for only an hour. This website is a RIPOFF!

Thanks so much for writing in you all! Was thinking about doing this to help customize my search. Now know better. Best wishes in your situations, and thanks so much for sharing!!

This site comes across well from first glance. Upon signing up, only then did I realize the error of my ways and I called within 1 HOUR to cancel. No such luck.
I emailed asking for a refund and I got this draconian email, basically stating sorry you lose, because we posted our no refund policy in our legal mumbo jumbo.
Guess it's my fault for not reading all of the verbiage but I never expected such a business practice, especially at this point where service and customer satisfaction is key.
The site is slow, antiquated and most of data can be found elsewhere.
Don't waste your money.

I don't know what you are complaining about. What do you think they get their data from, thin air? They do the search job for you. They go on all the different websites, newspapers, etc.(at least when they are good) and put the information from there on their website. That is their job and like everybody else they want to get paid for their work.
How do I know that? I don't work for them, but I worked for a company in Germany who did the same kind for foreclosure. We got the information from different sources, put them together in a database and costumer would buy them for a certain area. I put the data in the computer, and I got paid for it. And yes, you could find the same thing at banks, government papers (like city hall) and newspapers. You could find them all by yourself, if you had enough time on hand. So stop complaining, they are just trying to make a different, by making it easier for people that are looking for a rental.

Before the internet world wide web, Rental Data really did work. It was a economic broker for renters to use with not costs to the landlords.
We found many properties over the year through them. But, we would sign up now. Times have changed, and Rental Data is our of date.
They should have created their own version of Craigslist, but didn't have the foresight, and the the founder Dolores died in 2004 or 2005.
However, they did have a great layout for how they listed properties. Something Craigslist could learn from. Craigslist needs to add additional definitions:
1. Make a picture mandatory.
2. Search by zip codes.
3. Neighborhood names.
5. House, condo, apt, duplex, 4 plex, etc.
6. Disclose owner of the unit being advertised as a rental.
7. This would cut the fraud.

I will use rental-data, because it is much better than craigslist.com . Craigslist is full of scam, and not trustworthy anymore, at least when you are looking for rentals. And the apartment complexes that are advertising on craigslist have most of the time a very bad reputation - see apartmentrating.com .
Rental-data is a list of rentals in Portland and around that area and I don't have to get the newspaper, look all over the internet... They just make it easier for me, especially because I don't live at the coast at the moment. I think they are doing a great job and of course they want to get paid for it.... don't you? I bet, you get paid at your job!!!

The bottom line is that
Rental Data is just out of date..........
And some landlords are angry with Rental Data claiming that Rental Data posted incorrect infomation about the properteis.
Save your life time fees, and the $$$$ a month in search fees.
And go to the free sites.
Personally, I have had better results just getting into the car, and driving around the neighborhoods I'd like to rent in. It is amazing all the unadvertised rentals on one street alone. Instead of sitting in front of the PC all day.

Sucka. There's a seeker born ever minute. Hey it's sustainable and green you money grubbing capitalist the $ goes to acorn and social justice.

That is quite the scam! I've been looking for an apartment for January, and i'm glad I didn't use Rental Data! I can't believe they are making people pay for that.
#17 Dec 22, 2010
There are a lot of things to look for when searching for apartments for rent. You need to make sure that the company that you are working with is legit. http://www.apartmentguide.com/apartments/New-...
#18 Dec 22, 2010
Yes, I have been scammed before, not as bad as this mind you, but its always good these days to make sure that things are looked at closely and that your instincts tell you that its a good thing.
#19 Dec 22, 2010
That really is scary! I am so tired though of all of these scams. I would much rather it be that we all were honest people and were wanting to make sure that we all feel that we are saving money and improving out lives. Like this site: www.apartmentguide.com/apartments/Florida/Gai... It's there to help us find better places to live. Why scam people into living in a crappy home? Don't you care about other people! I know this site does! We need more like them!

I see a pattern with things. The pattern is that any site that starts to become popular with a lot of hits and visits, is going to get spammed out and scammed out pretty quickly. Once this happens something else has to take its place. Take Myspace to Facebook for example. The question we have to ask is what comes after Facebook?

Why can't people make an honest buck these days. Its making me sick to my stomach. The things that some companies do....ah makes me so mad. We need an anti-scam alliance or something. Who is with me?
