Funny how this project suddenly takes on more life (at least from the Paki side) on the eve of Paki elections and the expected US pullout from Afghanistan ! While its good if it ultimately benefits the suffering masses, if one knows anything about Mr 10 % one can count on him coolly calculating exactly what's in it for him--politically and finacially. The question remains--where was he all these past years ?

Well, they have themselves to blame for not supplying fuel for and assisting Paki with the development of civilian nuclear reactors (CNRs)to meet its dire energy production shortfall--the same as they did for India.

Pakistan, Iran Launch Gas Pipeline

Sharon Behn
March 11, 2013

ISLAMABAD Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari is in Iran to inaugurate the construction of a new pipeline that could supply energy-starved Pakistan with natural gas

President Asif Ali Zardari and Iranian leader President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are launching the construction of a multi-billion-dollar pipeline that would pump badly-needed natural gas into Pakistan.

A ground-breaking ceremony was arranged at the border between the two countries

With peak oil reached, natural gas is on its way to surpass oil use in global energy equation. The gas use ( current 32 percent for gas, 39 percent for oil and 29 percent for power, coal and all other energy uses)is going to surpass oil use in couple decades.

America has not built any new oil refinery in the past 35 years as they know that new discoveries of oil are lagging behind the oil use R/P(RESERVE OVER PRODUCTION RATIO)whereas gas is becoming more abundant.

Those who have built new oil refineries or have already built them will be in shock as new oil won't be available as demanded.

That is why gas use will be more and more on the rise compared to oil use.

I love gas refining and I had my engineering work published in the annual International conferences in 2004 in Gas Processors of America, LRGCC, NACE, Kyoto Protocol in 2004 and in US Military Publications in 2005.

Gas refining gives much easy energy supplies compared to oil refining and gas is discovered more daily and has not reached peak with dropping R/P ratio like oil.

You can set up a very large gas refining of 100 mmscfd plant for just 40-60 million dollars. In oil refining you talk of billions of dollars.Gas is easier to pump and pipe lines of gas are not environmental hazards like oil and gas pipe lines are easy to fix.

Gas refining involves just one major equipment and that High Pressure Contactor(HPC)is not proprioty and license based like billion dollars oil refining equipment like complex crackers.

Gas pipelines are easy to fix, easier on the pumps and sales gas leaks are not hazardous to health.

Sanctions may have reduced Iranian oil refining from 6.5 mbpd to 4 mbpd, but easier and expanding gas industry has gone more productive(from 2 tcfy to over 6 mtcfy0 in the same period where oil declined there due to sanctions.Iran is now third biggest gas refiner after Russia and America and, from its second biggest in the world gas reserves of 1200 tcfy, it is supplying gas to Turkey and will soon to Pakistan.

Gas refineries are simple, involve much fewer and simpler equipment than oil refining. No wonder Iranians are talking of expanding their gas production/ refining to over 10 trillion cubic feet per year to supply it domestic, to Turkey, to Pakistan and swap some gas with Turkmanistan(import some gas from nearer to Tehran Turkman sources and sell the Persian Gulf Iranian gas to most convenient other export pipeline routes.

As easy it is Iranian gas refining industry has not been affected by sanctions and is on the rise for more domestic use and exports.

With light crude dis-appearing and more and more heavy oil(requiring equipment damaging cracking stresses, oil refining will have much complex and difficult technical challenges where negligeance can damage or even destroy refineries.Even the world's most heavily engineered America does not have that ample engineering at hand.

I did Petro Canada Toronto refinery assessment and I hate to mention how much damage came from heavy crude oil. They had to shut down the whole thing for ever. Another small refinery in western Canada dealt heavy oil and I assessed the damage. You need engineering, chemistry and API standards and I have not met even one American or Canadian engineer(with only my one and only one rare exception) who(me) has degree in chemistry, chemical engineering plus certification in API standards.Even the very top American or Canadian engineers(before my retirement)could not stand technical discussions for more than half hour because they had only one or two types of qualifications. you need about five types just to handle the problems effectively.

I think Pakistan has done it well to switch more to gas.Look at Jamnagar refineries in India built by making Europe sacrificial in the days when oil supplies and demand are dwindling on RESERVES/ PRODUCTION RATIOS.They had to pull 1.3 million barrels per day from Europe to Jamnagar India making Europe's decline now and fall later due to oil energy starvation. With more gas use than oil, Pakistan will not suffer as it does today due to lack of hydrocarbon energy.

It will be nice to see them gold and tan skin pretty Pak girls enjoying more of AC in summer. That lovely Pak reminds me of my youth and GC/ Anarkali/ Mall Lahore where I spent my college and youth before coming at Canada at age 22.

I think gas pipeline will be good blessing for them lucky Paks.

Iran to Pakistan, gas will flow
Through the pipeline, sure we know
Quarter trillion cubic feet yearly start
Will expand ten times, hold heart

Gas to Pak will generate power
Will make fertillizers for wheat flower
Be more CNG for cars, yes
More them cars, Paks will possess

More gas Pak pretty girls will use
For more cooking, won't refuse
And they'll cook more dish delish
Wish I eat them too , just wish

Gas is best energy gift
From Iran to Pak sans rift
IP pipeline will do wonder
More of gas, Paks won't go under

As world's world class natural gas engineer, I know for sure that the gathering and gas refining system there is capacitated to export 2 trillion cubic feet gas per year to Pakistan.

The start will be one fifth or so of that flow of gas. But when at maxed tilt, it will boost Pak energy basket from 1.2 mbpd equivalent to 2.5 per day.

Won't it be very impressive to compare with neighbour when one sixth population of Pak uses three times more per capita oil, gas and power combined compared to that neighbour of contention.

Iran- Pak pipe line, no longer dream
Gas will flow like pressured stream
Pressured stream and gas for Paks
Is reality, not just talks

Energy, yes today is king
And the gas is best that thing
Iran got second most oil too
Tops energy reserves, so true

Sanctions gone be soon for sure
Energy shortage, can't endure
Sans energy, will eat grass
Energy gives you strength and mass

Persiana yes, she's got it all
Oil and gas, beauty for love fall
Come Persiana, I do miss
On your cheeks, my love kiss
