I am relocating to the Phoenix area at the end of February from West Virginia, and I could use some guidance in regards to safe neighborhoods, nice rental property (must be pet friendly), areas to avoid, etc. I am a 25 year old single woman, so safety is a must. I have been to Phoenix several times, but living somewhere is always different from enjoying a visit. Any input is appreciated!

I live about 35 miles outside Phx but you should know this is a gun happy place and shootings are not uncommon....so, if you were my daughter, I'd suggest you contact the Phoenix Police Department's Community affairs Office and ask then to define which neighborhoods in Phx have the least crime.

Find out where Sheriff Joe Arpiehole lives and move into his neighborhood.

Oh, if you're Hispanic, never mind.

Renee, what kind of work/school will you be doing and what area?
There are good and bad neighborhoods everywhere.
Contacting a realtor is a good idea.
Don't go by pictures you see on the internet for picking an apt. Most of them in all but the worst areas look good and are often called 'luxury' or 'executive' apts. Don't buy it. You could still be in an undesirable area.
Set up a 'dummy' email account and post the addy and some (with good advice) can email you.
You will soon see the trolls come out of the wallpaper here and easily mislead you for fun.
I'd be happy to help. But be careful.
Phoenix area is awesome and I think you will love it here.
My neighbor is from Elk River area and I had relatives from several areas in WVa.
Good Luck.

Charter schools are very popular here. Some say they have a better outcome. I don't have school age kids so it wouldn't be fair to say one way or another. I just don't know. My grandson lived here in elementary grades and went to a charter school and did well. I've heard bad and good about others.

Charter schools are an example of another failed republican strategy to end the public school system.

Parents can choose which school to send their child to, a public school or a privately owned school that receives funds from the government.

This was an attempt to end the social education system,
As republicans/independents don't believe your children are entitled to an education .

These schools are rampant with drop outs from the public schools (better education )

Not all parents can afford a truly private school (as the republican leadership believes),

Put your kids in a public school, if you have the means a private school .. Charter schools are full of problem children and should be abolished

I don't think you can say it's just charter schools who are full of problem children.

Thanks for the advice. I've downloaded crime maps as well.

Thanks for your suggestions, very helpful.
I will be working on my masters at ASU as well as working.
I have noticed that every apartment looks phenomenal online, and I will definitely want to see the apartment or home I'll be living in before agreeing to any lease terms. It's easy to make things sound better than they are, isn't it? I have spent some time in Phoenix but not enough to know what the different areas are like. As long as it's safe and my pets are welcome I think I'll do just fine :)
That's neat about your neighbor and family - My office in WV is about 20 minutes from where the Elk River joins into the Kanawha.
