After decades of relentless work aiding the mentally ill, Dr R England as retired. In his soon to be published book called simply 'Green Bay Doctor', he describes how forced treatment was the only way that some of his clients were able to begin there path to recovery. As a psychiatrist and a Doctor who had a family member loved one with schizophrenia - his brother Crassus - Dr England knows well the challenges of caring for individuals who firmly and consistently refuse help.
For Dr England, the dilemma of forced care, should be based on whether an individual is able to fully understand the nature, risks, benefits and alternatives of treatment, or of refusing that treatment. Because certain psychotic and manic individuals do not recognize their own symptoms. Without treatment they rarely voluntarily seek the care that they desperately need and deserve, often leading to heartbreaking outcomes such as suicide, homelessness and incarceration.
Dr England said his brother Crassus, and hundreds of thousands of others with severe mental illness, are declining treatment and have no one to listen to their woes when they complain about the side effects of medications, and he said, his role was to make sure they do not enter a period of stubborn denial that they needed help. The Governor of Wisconsin will be attending Dr England book signing event in Green Bay, W.I.
