Philly schools consider universal enrollment

There are 2 comments on the story from Feb 9, 2014, titled Philly schools consider universal enrollment. In it, reports that:

When it's time to enroll in school in Philadelphia, students face a bewildering array of choices: Neighborhood public school? Cyber school? Charter? Private or religious school? What about a specialty district school focused on science? Performing arts? International affairs? Then, applying for admission can entail reams of red tape.

Think about those logistics for a minute. First transportation to and from those schools. Then class size and/or the hiring of additional teachers at that school to handle an increased demand. Those new teachers might not have the same effect as the teachers that made a school a top choice. Nor would existing teachers thrive with an increased work load & student body. Would a larger student body cause distractions that would hinder learning. Too many variables to dump all kids in one school because that's what will happen, the 'better' schools will get the enrollment.

This does nothing to fix poor schools either other than possible layoffs for the staff as incentive to improve. Yes you should have say in how your school tax dollars are spent but spending them all in one place is not a wise decision.

Isn't this already happening
Don't all kids get bused to northeast high
It seems that way

The solution would be to force all kids to go to neighborhood schools
Thus good neighborhoods would have good schools and the tax base wouldn't move out

And septa wouldn't have to subsidize their fare
