The Melody of Life:
Jed Madela
“Grabe ka naman! Para kang nag-aparisyon!” This was what Sharon Cuneta remarked when a balladeer sang one of her favorite songs,“Sana’y Walang Wakas”. The Megastar was awed by the balladeer’s performance and was so happy with it.
It was like another Filipino warrior won another bout against a foreigner in a rematch. The news came like lightning, a Filipino won almost every award there is in the World Championships in Hollywood in the United States of America. His voice was so electrifying. He sent a shock and glory to the Philippine musicians and singers.
Born in July 14, 1979 in Iloilo, John Edward Tajanlangit or known to the public as Jed Madela was raised in a family who is musically inclined, his father a musician himself. He was educated in University of San Agustin in Iloilo and graduated in BS Business Administration (Commerce).
“Actually, I wanted to put up a business, a bar or restaurant” he said,“as long as there is music
within it”.
Aside from for his dad as his main inspiration for singing, Jed also draws inspiration from Luther Vandross along with several local artists.
Tough Decisions
He went to Manila to search for a job, and he did. He almost managed to be a flight attendant which is what his parents wanted him to be.“But I wanted to sing,” he said. Although against the will of his parents, especially his dad, he did continued with his singing career as he signed under Universal Music Company.
Humble Beginnings
He was with the choir when he was still at San Agustin and later he auditioned to be the lead vocals of the local band “Dye Vest”.“I remember the day when we went to one of those small beer houses in Leganes, we were a few inches away from a possible drunk gone amok,” he chuckled. For him, it was one of the most unforgettable moments when they started as a small town band gone big in Iloilo and it was a humbling experience for him.
Contrary to popular beliefs, according to Jed, he did not leave Dye Vest but he decided to stay in Manila where he can pursue his dreams.“Until now, we still contact each other, especially when I’m in Iloilo.”
Facing the Music
Having stayed for Manila, he started his career in singing with Universal Music with his tita, Anne Mercado as his manager. It was a struggle for him, as he sometimes compares himself with his contemporaries who became successful. He even dared to go acoustic just to reach his goals.
Let the Voice Be Heard!
It was like a try-out but they never expected to return such honor to the Philippines. When he won the silver award for the Voice of Asia, people took notice of the balladeer.“Usually, we don’t want to inform the press that we’ll be going to a contest,” he remarked. It was sometime in 2005 when he shook the world of Philippine music when he won the World Championships which was held in Hollywood, USA. He didn’t just win a prize; he swiped almost every major award that he could possibly get including The Grand Champion of the World.“I was numb, I didn’t even knew that I won until when I was back in the hotel.” He was proud that the Filipinos finally have the chance to have their talents showcased in such a prestigious event.“It is one of my contributions to the music industry, as a Filipino, as an Ilonggo.”

Being Ilonggo
“I missed the days when I just go to a mall wearing simple clothes and travel just anywhere”. This is what Jed misses about his hometown.“I missed being simple”. He usually spends his time with his family and friends whenever he’s home.

Being with the Champions of ASAP
Of course with stardom comes fame. He now performs at ASAP, a Sunday noontime variety show of ABSCBN where he gets to perform with other champions of different singing contests such as Sarah Geronimo, Eric Santos and Christian Bautista. Of course, along with fame are people trying to put up intrigues with him. He noted one rumor that “Sinasapawan ko daw ang mga kasama ko pag may duet or band”(His voice takes over the other singers during a duet or a band performance) which he denies.“My family gets affected everytime there are intrigues about me, but they (Jed’s family) supports me.”

Being with the Champions also led him to those who inspired him to sing such as Gary Valenciano, Martin Nivera, Lani Misalucha, Regine Velazques, Lea Salonga and Sharon Cuneta are the ones who inspires him..

To Do Beyond!
“I’m inspired to do more whenever I see people being touched by my music.”

Jed is aware that life in show business is not permanent, so he wanted to have a business. As he mentioned earlier, a bar or restaurant or maybe a music school. Anything that has a relation with music. He defines music as something that expresses him best in which he releases his emotions.“Music is part of me, part of us.”

As he continues to sing the songs of life, he always keeps in his mind the 3Ps of success,“Practice, Patience and Prayer for strength and guidance”.“Don’t let anything stop you. Go, as long as your not stepping someone’s foot”.

Walang katulad si Jed, a humble Ilonggo despite the big successes. The one who is inspired to sing, and inspires people with his melodies./PN

I'm proud to say that I had the honor to know Jed personally. I am his number one fan in Iloilo then (and till now). That was in 2000 when he was still with Dye Vest Band that I would often watch his gigs be it in Barracks, Del Rio kung sa diin diin pa. He would often visit me in the Restaurant that I managed (KRR) with Jandy and the rest of the gang. I very proud of Jed's achievement.
