Do my rats hate me?

New Zealand

I have two little girl rats that I got about 2 months ago. One of them is reasonably adventurous (in fact, she's watching me type this and sitting on my leg right now) but the other one is super timid. I've done everything I can think of... They get looked after super well, I built them a playpen so they could explore the place a bit more (I can't rat-proof my room) and climb on me etc, I've fed them treats out of my hands and even had them lick baby food off my fingers and this is all fine. However, as soon as I try to pick either of them up, they panic. I've tried everything I can think of but they just won't let me touch them! The timid one even squealed and threw herself at a wall to get away from me and now I'm scared I've destroyed our relationship forever! Have I? What can I do to fix it? Or does it just need time?

Ok listen since they r young they probaly haven't had humans( big giants to them) pick them up alot. Try holding them to your chest alot and if u feel they are ready hold them in your hands sitting down though and have them close to your legs ( hold them low) and progress from their. Good luck! If u need anymore info about pet rats plz write back

hi! i'd love to know how lisa got on, i have had my two girls for a week now and the same thing one is really adventurous and the other is so timid she screams everytime i try to pick her up, its really upsetting, they are so well looked after and i really dont want tehm to hatee me, i also think im traumatising them by trying to socialise them everyday. help!

you are supposed to socialise with them every day, and like Jewlz said they won't be very used to humans handling them. just keep playing and feeding and, over time, they will start to enjoy your company.
