Hey, i got two girl rats from a petshop about a month ago, and i've tried so hard to get them to stop biting, and i cant handle them atall they just bite agresively everytime i try, although im making progress by that i mean, they come out on the cage door and let me stroke them but they have a problem with me touching there sides and picking them up that's the only time they bite,
it's really bad them being stuck in the cage all this time, even though i try to give them as much attention as possible, any advice for picking them up ??

some times rats just get bad moods like us they can be grumpy, mine is great one day but the next it may attack my hand if I go to get her out of the cage, she is up and down some days fine and cuddly the next she may be a bit miffed. I get her out at least an hour every day she lives in a big cage with another two girls i handle all three of my girl rats regulary , but you can get the odd rat like I have that gets grumpy from time to time

No. It might be. If your rat is young there is more chance of it being a little nip, it's not too serious though. They will stop sooner or later, if they are older i am not really sure what to do.

are you sticking your fingers in the cage? if you are you should stop. when you stick your fingers in the cage rats think that you are teasing you and may start to bight.

Ok I got a real annoying problem.
I have 2 rats. When I first got them we were really social and they settled in well. They get treats and everything weekly and are spoiled beyond belief. They are often running wild in our bedroom from say 4pm till 10am-midday.
After 3 weeks one bit me hard enough to pierce a hole in the top of my ear. We decided it was best to put him back in the cage with his brother for the rest of the day.... thats not the trouble. Now a month and a week or so later the other one has begun creeping under the blankets and biting my toes really bloody hard. He has only drawn blood once. At first we thought it was my thermal fluffy socks... took them off, it wasnt he bit me again. Tried washing my feet everything but he wont stop biting them every chance he gets when I sleep.
WHY?!?!?!?! What can I do? Its really hard not to just lash out and kick the lil rat is there anything I can do? I dont want to put them in there cage as they are generally hyperactive at random periods at night and make alot of noise in their cage, fighting and running around in circles... Im not that mean.

My rat just started doing the same thing. He was super nice and friendly.. then out of nowhere biting hands and feet. He even went after our dog and bit him.=-( it sucks cuz he was SUPER gentle.. and now i don't want to take him out of the cage.. but I keep do cuz I don't want him to be stuck in there so long.. and poof always biting. Let me know if your situation changes/ gets better?? ug.. I hope its just a phase

Mine just started biting my feet too!!!! Only when I have on socks, though. However, I wear socks a lot, and I have developed a pretty massive paranoia about her biting my feet. I'd really like to continue wearing socks and also letting her run free in my apartment, but I'm not sure what to do about the biting. If anyone has any suggestions about how to quell this painful urge of hers, I'd really appreciate it.

I got 2 rats and one just barely got socilized to the point where he would come out of the cage at free will to play with me, but it seems like he is either play nibbling or testing if I am tastey or mind getting nibbled. Every time he does it i scowl at him and give him a stern "NO" but don't yell. Hopefully he will quit biting soon so me and him can chill together all the time.

Hey! Mine bite my toes too! they come out of hiding in the bathroom, and have drawn blood. it's so aggressive, so not out of fear. I have a theory shes trying to establish dominance? That's all i know. But I don't know if I should negatively enforce the behavior by grabbing her and putting her back. I just jump. Well just offering you support because I know how it feels! It is weird!

Ok my rat is sooooo friendly but when I put it in bed with me is literally attacks my toes and feet! It drew blood once on my toe so I wear socks now but it stil really hurts. I take her out of her 6ft cage like whenever I'm home and she isn't sleeping which is alot of the time and she never bites me, she has the best little rattie life but in my bed she attacks my feet! Even on my bedroom floor. No where else in the house just my bedroom floor hahah it's soooo strange! I'm glad I'm not the only rat owner who gets their feet eaten by beloved pet rats hahah

I once adopted a rat from the humane society who was on 'death row' for biting a volunteer. I too, volunteered at that time, and ended up adopting him despite him biting me as well very badly, as well. Within one month, I had him sociable and no longer even nipping. He wasn't as friendly to strangers. But he would cuddle and even let me put a harness on him! All it takes is patience, understanding, and a ton of attention. At first, you have to be prepared to discipline adequately- spray water from a spray bottle. My guy was already over a yr old, and his biting could be corrected, I hope this will help give at least a couple ideas so you and your little ones can be happy
