Gerbils sudden death

I adopted 2 gerbils a few months ago I was told they were about a year old. They have been healthy as far as I can tell and were acting as normal however when I got up this morning I found both of them dead in their cage. I have no idea how this could have happened they seemed perfectly fine last night. I have googled it trying to find and answer and there are a lot of situations people have had where 1 gerbil has suddenly died and another become ill after that but I couldn't find any where 2 gerbils had died at the same time. I'm very upset and confused about this I feel like I have let them down if I didn't care for them right. I am wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or knows what could have happened I am wondering if they could have been poisoned by something in their cage could anyone tell me way in which this could happen?
I'd really like to understand what happened so that if I ever do decide to get more gerbils I can stop this happening again. Thanx

I know this is a little old, but we had the same thing happened. They were literally fine one day, and both were dead the next morning. The only thing I found that made sense was air freshener. My husband loves the stuff, and sprayed it in my daughters play room where the gerbils were the day they died. Doing a little research I found many air fresheners can be highly toxic to gerbils. Sorry for your babies, my daughter was really upset too.

I'm sorry for your loss. It sounds like poisoning since they both died at the exact same time. Although not widely known, eucalyptus is highly toxic to birds and small mammals. They have very sensitive respiratory systems so fragrances in the air or scented candles should be considered as possible causes.

im sure that you are a very good pet owner and care alot for your pets and so is ur kid but first you need to inspect the room for any thing you think could have caused the death and then do some research stuff you have found that you think could have caused the death

P-S: I know this really late so sorry for the lateness

I know this thread is ancient but as a gerbil owner who has just experienced the same thing its important to share information. My two female gerbils went from being perfectly fine one hour (I left for work at 10:30) and then when my other half checked them 3 hours later they were dead. Including those two I have 8 gerbils and all of the others are fine, if it was an infection my youngster would have surely caught it (She's the runt of her litter and only 8 weeks old)
The only difference I can find in he way the two that died were treated is that they loved to chew, as such their (Pets at Home) chew toy was far more chewed than any of my others, and they were also closest to the window.
My room isn't cold, but when searching for anything I thought could have caused these extremely sudden deaths I found a little damp and what looks like the beginning of a mould formation, the weather we have been having lately is really battering the exterior wall. I know how delicate the gerbils respiratory system is so wonder if that is something that could have had an effect. Anyway, I am visiting the pet shop tomorrow to see if I can ask about their chew toys (I'm not happy with the amount of dyes they use on them anyway) so I will get another opinion. All my others have been moved as far away from the external wall and all chew toys have been removed for safety (Much to everyone annoyance) Hopefully someone can get to the bottom of this so no one has to experience this horrible loss again.

We bought 2 gerbils 3 months ago, I found them both dead this afternoon and thought it was very unusual that they both died.on inspecting them and there creepy cAstle cage I noticed that they had blocked the access to their water bottle by chewing cardboard that the kids put in , I'm not sure how long it was blocked for as they always seemto block it and in the past I've unblOcked access to it.

My gerbils are dying, 2 are dead and 1 is dying. I don't know what the cause is. But my sick gerbil, Tim, is having leg problems. He's dragging his legs around and when he tries to stretch them out or resituate them it hurts him so he lies down and won't move. What should I do? So far 3 of my gerbils have died recently. 2 males today and a female about 3 weeks ago. At this rate, none will get to see the new year, Christmas, or even Halloween! What should I do?

(it's always good to remember to check their food & water every day. It helps for man reasons.)

I've had lots of gerbils and find most only live till about 2 years of age.
Keep them clean, fresh water every day, make sure bottle is cleaned regularly with a bottle brush and that when you return it to the cage tap the ball bearing on the nozzle to ensure the water comes out.
Give them the usual gerbil food, plus a little veg like broccoli, raw peas, diced cucumber, and just a peanut each and a few sunflower seeds as a treat.
Lots of soft bedding I use dust free sawdust and torn up clean paper like kitchen towel.
Hope this is of some help.

My gerbil became ill over night and died in less than 48 hours. I am super sad that I cry everyday
