Food Hound HELP!

We just adopted a 5 year old cat a little over a week ago. We were told he cannot eat dry food because he gets "blocked" and can't urinate - so only wet food. We knew this going in even though our 14 year old cat whose been with us for 12 years is on Hills C/D prescription dry food due to crystals (blocking - which she had surgery to correct over 10 years ago and has had no problems since). She will not even touch wet food or any other food. Our new cat will eat anything in site. Wet, dry, corn, pie, cookies, you name it - even so bold as to try to eat off our plates should we walk away for a minute! Because he's a big boy, we were instructed to feed him 1 can a day. 1/2 in a.m. and 1/2 in p.m.(the good, healthy, no grain stuff). Should I be feeding him more?? We use a hook and eye on the door my other cats food is in. She can get in and out, but he can't. The other day, he got wedged in for a moment, but was able to get into the room and eat ALL her food.(She's a grazer so we leave a good amount of dry food out all day). If he's blocking when he eats dry food, I'm assuming the Hills C/D would be okay for him since it's to help prevent struvite crystals and blocking. Should I be concerned he's occasionally getting into this dry food? If so, how else can I keep him away from it? Should I be feeding him more wet? I don't think any amount of food will keep him away from what he truly wants.
