Before you spend money on a vet, pills or a shrink, read this. It's soooo obvious now, both my cats steer away from anything that has or had Febreeze (household freshner) on it. One of them used to lick his fur off his paws, legs, belly and top of back near tail. I had tried changing food, stress management, etc. It took me years to find out what was the problem. Never thought is was something like Febreeze. Now I know, I do not use Febreeze anymore and my cats love me for it.

My 11 year old Cat Habib started pulling out tuffs of hair from his belly and side a few months ago. We took him to the vet and they told me that he was fat and had dermatitis. They gave him a steroid shot and it helped a little, but he is still continuing to pull out hair and bite himself. Anybody have another idea of what to do?

if there haven't been any changes in the cats life take him to the vet. My cat started to loose hair, I didn't realize he was ripping it out the first few days. The vet thought he may have inlammatory bowel disease and he was treated for such. Two weeks later he was euthanized. He had a terrible aggressive cancer tumor that was causing him huge discomfort. he kept licking and tearing at the spot. He lost weight and had trouble navigating as well., It was a quick two weeks to his demise.

My cat has been ripping his hair out for the last week. He's eating playing and being normal, all but the hair ripping fetish. I am taking him to the vet tomorrow. We will see. I will keep everyone posted.

kitty pulls her hair out only when inside, never when outside because he is too stimulated outside hunting and investigating. so we try and keep him amused when inside

Gabapentin is used in people usually for chronic pain and for treatment of epilepsy although it has many other uses. It has been used alot lately in cats and dogs for anxiety disorders. I sure hope it helps your cat! I have a cat who has recently started pulling his fur out and he is a wreck. I may ask his vet about trying that with him.
Thanks and good luck!
I have a 15 year old male indoor cat who has also started pulling clumps of hair out. I feel a trip to the vet would be so traumatic for him that I hesitate to do that and would like advice in order to help him myself. I did change his food a few months ago, but can't remember if that is when this all started. Will switch back and see, but if anyone has advice, please give.

I did change his food a few months ago, but can't remember if that is when this all started. He is very thin now, but eats all the time--even "stealing" food off the table and stove, which he never did before. Any advice will be appreciated.

I have a cat that is pulling out her fur all of the sudden as well. Taking her to the vet on Friday.

For anyone who has a cat that eats all the time, but still loses weight, something to check out is hyperthyroidism. I have two cats with this (not the one pulling out her fur). I just put a little medication from the vet, inside their ear flap daily and they stopped losing weight. One actually gained quite a bit.

My cat had the same problem...my vet put him on zrtec, 1/4 of a tablet and he stopped immediatly. He has an allergy to something, we can't figure it out.You can get zrtec at the pharmacy, just get the plain one, not the decongestant kind. Jasper is so much happier now and so am I as I won't have a bald cat.
I hope this works for you and your cat.
Hi Carla, my cat is pulling out his fur from belly. Nobody knows the reason and I would like to try zrtec just to see if that works. Did your cat take it everyday? For how long? thanks in advance.

My cat pulled out hair also. Tried everything. A friend told me about revolution. I went back to the vet and started that and stopped frontline. Worked very well. Now two years later pulling out hair and throwing up. Going to take to vet again. Last visit he was ok three months ago. Might try the aloe first. The revolution might help some of you. Talk to your vet to see. Thanks and have a great day .Marcy.

My cat is 5 years old. Over the last year, he has started pulling out his hair. I've done 3 rounds of frontline, 2 weeks of prednisone, pheromone sprays and diffusers, vacuuming weekly, kitty wipes, removal of bothersome infected teeth which cost a fortune, and a $500 blood panel and skin scraping. Not getting any answers and running out of funds to look further in to it. Breaks my heart seeing him do this :( any suggestions?
