Guinea pigs originated in South America. What we don't know is where the name came from. We know that they were domesticated by Dutch sailors in the 1500s. Some say they are called "pigs" because the sounds they make sound like the sounds pigs make. We really don't know for sure though. The "guinea" part is even more odd. Some say people mistook Guiana, a Dutch colony in South America, and thought they said guinea. One other theory is that they are called "guinea" pigs because the British sold them for one guinea, a unit of money at the time. All of this is speculation of course, but it is very interesting, since the guinea pig is neither from guinea, nor is it a pig.

The Quechua name is cuey, maybe that sounded like guinea to Europeans. They thought the Quechua word Rimac was pronounced Lima. And the capital city of Peru is still called that. I like guinea pig as well, especially roasted in chile.

You sound like you may be on the spectrum. Are you on the spectrum? Or are you just an insufferable know-it-all? I mean the autistic spectrum. I treated autistic kids for years and you sound just like an asperger's kid. Jesus, I hope you are because if you aren't, then I cannot imagine how anyone can stand to be around you.

Flash, you're a feckin eejit. Only a wee tord like yourself would know (or care) that the Quechuan word for guinea pig is whatever it is. What a dork.

SEEING how this is an anthro forum and his details were on topic, I thought it was very concise, germain and funny...they usually deep fry the rodents in oil of some kind.. better than spouting nonsence about allah.

Okay, you are officially a feckin eejit AND a three-star loser. I went to the site where they list your posts; you can't even spel! Let me guess -- you worked in the "anthro field" -- did they trust you with a shovel? I'm guessing you probably got the grad students coffee, and you probably got that wrong. The amazing thing is is how hard it is to troll this site, the posters are all such know-nothing knuckleheads, so its troll, troll, troll all the long day and look at all the thanks I get: nothing. What's the world coming to?

Perhaps the more important question is, "Where did the guinea pig go?"
