Taking half of husbands SS benefit

Hello..
As I understand it, I can draw half my husbands Social Security benefit without it affecting his benefit. If I did this and later he passed away, can I stop taking it and instead begin drawing his full benefit or am I stuck with the smaller "half" benefit because it's actually already his?
