Why Cutting Social Security Benefits Is Such a Big Deal

There are 36 comments on the blog.ourfuture.org story from Apr 15, 2013, titled Why Cutting Social Security Benefits Is Such a Big Deal. In it, blog.ourfuture.org reports that:

Last week President Obama announced a budget that includes something called “chained CPI” as a way to reduce Social Security benefits. I will not support it. And will not vote for any plan that includes cuts to benefits Americans have earned.

The proposal has already sparked large protests by groups ranging from organized labor to nonpartisan veterans’ organization. But what exactly is chained CPI? And what makes cutting Social Security benefits so harmful right now?

Many are truly disappointed in Obama. Why would he cut meager benefits to the elderly and then fund a state of the art spaceship to tow an asteroid . Makes no sense at all. I guess he figure he has his so to hell with the seniors.

Are you Liberal's now going to complain that ss is for the rich? Never mind that anyone who works pays into it, Obama wants to take it away, and make sure the elderly have a really hard time and die.

So you are finally admitting that you are against cuts to entitlement programs. Republicans are complaining that the cuts are not big enough. You Democrats are complaining about cuts. President Obama is the only one showing leadership.

Some of us think if Joe Biden can spend $600,000 for a motel bill in London, or throw money away on the Solyndras or those little shrimp treadmills, we should not be taking money from Grandma.

Actually you must have been strangely silent a couple of decades ago when real reforms could have been achieved. Today, i don give a ph uk. The onus is the continuing expansion of government while not having the resources to pay for its past obligations. Especially the ones who paid fifteen per cent of their pay checks for the cause. Entitlement is just a word shoved down the throats of people as their wages were extorted from them and placed in the corrupted general fund. That is why people are buying false guns. They are waiting for you. And are defending themselves quite nicely.

So it's good to see which posters are against entitlement cuts and closing corporate tax loopholes created by self-serving corporate welfare lobbyists. Instead the lazy whiners want to micro-manage our ELECTED officials, elected by We the People. The irony is delightful!

Social security usually pays people a lot more than they paid in.Payments were raised above the rate of inflation for decades.Payments should be reduced to a level that is sustainable. That way future generations can at least get something.Poor people will still get food stamps etc.We don't have nearly enough money to continue at the current rates. We could also reduce welfare benefits to able bodied people to encourage them to get a job (mexicans do it) and pay some taxes.Heck I've seen wheelchair bound people driving tractor trailers.

Actually the COLA's were adjusted a few times and people would be getting one third more at least if kept to the original one. The problem is that government is corrupted and many people as citizens have become the same. Playing and cheating the system has us blaming each other and the fear of cleaning it all up plays on politics. The stealing of the people aging and nearing collecting social security is going to be nasty as for many social security will be survival now. The next few decades are going to be tough.

Seems that you are mixing apples and oranges.

Workers PAY INTO Medicare.

Welfare on the other hand is a totally an entitlement that gives benefit WITHOUT expecting them to contribute.

People who have worked their whole life CONTRIBUTING to society DESERVE to be compensated in their later years.

People who don't contribute to society (except for the disabled) what THEY get is an unearned ENTITLEMENT and is a drain/strain on our economic system.

It is misleading to bunch the two together.

Social security doesn't pay a whole lot.

Some people get $1,000/month (before deducting $100 for Medicare)

How much less do you think old folks should be expected to live on??

And will a cut in Social Security actually PUT MORE PEOPLE ON foodstamps??
