Pat Howard: Mayors lack good options for stemming fiscal slide

Full story: Erie Times News

Former Erie Mayor Rick Filippi went off on his successor in a letter to the editor in Saturday's Erie Times-News, in the process claiming credit for improvements in the city's long-term debt position in recent years.

Hey, no matter who Erie has as it's mayor won't mean a hill of beans at this point. The city is now beyond any hope of turning the arrow toward a better direction. What's one person placed in charge going to do at this juncture ? Perhaps slow the decaying process of this already pungent corpse ?
What everyone fails to realize and lacks the courage to say is that Erie cannot just sit back and wait for some magic man to appear and fix all it's festering ills. A solid and dependable solution comes not simply from leadership alone but from the troops within. You could have the most talented and experienced team of public officials known to mankind assembled and occupying City Hall but if the citizenry itself remains dumb and dormant like you have in Erie, then the whole thing stays to same.
Harsh words, I know. Calling out Erie people as dumb and dormant. But how many do you know over the last couple of decades that would be willing to make big changes in their habits and behaviors as a result of their own actions and not because somebody simply handed them the goods ? Not many I'll bet. Sure it's easy to say you or someone else would be willing to become actively involved but actually backing up the words and putting them to the test ? Not very likely.
If Erie people did have those qualities about them then the city never would have fallen so far behind in the first place. They would have demanded better of their officials and themselves. They would not have blindly ridden the same electoral carousal time after time after time.
So you see, it does indeed take a whole lot more to solve a city's immense problems than just saying a particular person should be in or out of office. The one person in charge of a city of 100,000 has to have the cooperation of the masses who must possess the energy and determination to do their part and make changes in their own manners of functioning. Erie people have neither the energy or determination for the massive task at hand which leads to the conclusion that they will never do anything but continue to blame everyone and everything instead of admitting the hard truth.

Well I would not go that far with public berating. Look at the support I'm getting in Toronto. Crack smoking can turn this all around for the good citizens of Erie. I would like to make Erie a sister city to Toronto. So keep up crack piping Erie, we will be together soon. And hey I liked the controversy Ricky Fillippi gave you. You need more of that kind of leadership.

Evidently you've missed the recent trend in politics to let everything fall to shit in an effort to save having to pay "damn taxes". Erieites are simply getting what they want.

I do agree that Erie people are getting just what should happen when you allow yourselves to grow fat, dumb, and lazy. Always looking for answers from someone or somewhere else doesn't work especially when so many individuals refuse to take the measures necessary to gradually dig out from under. Erie people just look at each other with a vacant stare complaining among themselves how they've been cheated out of a better life because someone else didn't make the world better for them. So they simply shrug their shoulders, tighten their belts another notch and brace themselves for the next round of reduced conditions that are sure to come.
I don't even attempt to help the situation. I know many with higher means feel the same way. It makes no sense anymore to try and throw valuable resources down the same old rat hole. That's exactly why bigger businesses and higher paying jobs don't materialize here as everyone hopes. These business people know about Erie all too well. It's a known losing proposition and these folks are not in the business to waste their time considering this area. What Erie gets then are more cheap paying stores and counter service jobs because that's what Erie's education level and earning potential will support.
But hey, why consider making changes ? It's up to others to make things better here !
