I'd add to the list of goals, the option of zeroing out the estate tax, both state and federal, and the minimization of IRD (income in respect of a decedent). Many clients like the option of redirecting assets to family controlled or influenced charities to retain and control as much of the estate as possible. Good estate planning would freeze the estate's value, squeeze it through discounts, and pass it in a way that benefit's the heirs in a time and fashion that works best for their individual needs.
