That would depend entirely on your knowledge in the real estate market. I would not advise anyone to invest in anything they don't understand. That is one thing Warren Buffet is famous for, he only invests in what he understands.
Assuming you do know the real estate market and you can out perform the stock market then absolutely. You investment will be more secure and fluctuate less. Its hard to see the down side.

Harlyd makes a good point: invest in what you understand. There are always good buys in real estate - if you know what you're doing. It's just as easy to lose money.
